Mash Hopping - Outside the bag?

Post #1 made 13 years ago
I regularly add first wort hops. My question is, would there be any advantage/disadvantage of adding the FWH addition to the mash, outside the bag. I figure this would be just like FWH, with the added bonus of an extra 90mins steeping?

After a quick search online it seems that it is, for non-biab brewers, a very inefficient use of hops, with on a small hop effect. It was mentioned in a couple of places that it may lower mash Ph.

With BIAB, however, the hops would not be lost with the lautering, which does not apply to BIAB if the hops are put outside the bag, maybe in a hop sock to keep things tidy.

Has anyone done it? Is it pointless/beneficial/harmful? What do we think?

I've thought of that too many times
because in BIABrewing you can keep the mash hops as FWH
but if you are mashing traditionally these hops just stay with the spend grains.

I can't imagine any harm done and if the lower ph really happens because of the hops,
then mash hops could substitute a bit the acidulated malt and on top of that they would
contribute to flavor at least the same as FWH but maybe even more because they steep 90min+!

I'd love to hear opinions of other more experienced brewers though!

Good Day, I have mash hopped as you say, outside the bag.
The Flavor comes out more than FWH.
It seems to me that the best temperature to add mash hops is about 155F/68C because the Hops add vegetable flavor below that temperature, So it may be better to add the hops as you raise the mash to mashout.

This is just Observation, and I have not found any data about "Mash Hopping"

I always though that BIAB and this forum has changed so many old fashioned myths about homebrewing,
so now there is an opportunity for another experiment :) I think this combined mash-first wort hopping
must be put to the test!!!

Hopefully I won't have another brew for a bit of time with my current equipment but because I'm a hophead
I'd truly love to do something like that.
