Fermentation Chamber

Post #1 made 14 years ago
Well, what can I say, it's Christmas in July. I finaly purchased the stuff I needed for a fermentation chamber. My Ranco 2 Stage Pre-wired Temperature Controller has arrived, and I found and purchased the other piece I needed, the Freezer. I was lucky, while hitting all the appliance stores, and ready to head home for the day, I decided to check out Lowes in Burton, MI. USA. As I was heading to the Appliance area, I walked by a Frigedaire 14.8 cuft chest freezer in the center of the aisle. What luck, a dented freezer marked down from $439 to $339 and I could not find a dent on it, the salesman could not find it either, then we did find it, it was center at the bottom, of the freezer and so small it's a "who cares issue". Well, I thought I was lucky, $339 for a 14.8 cuft Chest freezer from a decent manufacturer. Then the sales guy told me that if I was interested, that their policy at Lowes is to throw in an extended warranty for 2 more years beyond the manufacturer warranty for a total of 3 yrs. all parts/labor on scratch and dents? PUT A SOLD SIGN ON IT. It gets delivered Monday  I am looking forward to trying to do some Lager's now that I can control my fermentation temps, and also keep some of the off flavors in my Ales I think I am getting from fermentating at too high of a temp.
How's the saying go?, "Even a blind squirrel finds a nut sometimes". CHEERS :champ:

Very nice dabeer

I'm not in the position to buy any freezers/refrigerators right now but I think about it often as I'll be graduating from grad school next year by this time. I'm kinda torn between buying a newer fridge/freezer or buying a used unit from craigslist. Both have their pros (newer model will be much more energy efficient used model will be much cheaper) and cons (newer model more expensive used model less energy efficient, perhaps by a lot). Obviously your view was to spend a little more $$ now and save on your energy bill. Was there any other reason behind buying new vs. used?

Again, congrats. I'm truly jealous.

I'm not convinced that the energy efficiency is as important with a fermentation chamber. A lot of the time you're running it at relatively warm temps and thus the compressor duty cycle is much smaller

Fair enough. I guess I was thinking more about a kegerator setup where you're keeping it at lower temps.

Yes, makes sense in a kegerator

Just replaced my 40 year old keg fridge with a 5 yr old! Looking forward to a noticeable difference on the bill!

Hey guy's, thanks for the conversation on the fermentation chamber. To answer BBH's question, yes there was a few factors why I bought new. Believe me, $ wise, I wanted used and researched Craigslist and store sales for a month or longer. I found the Craigslist to be too pricy for a 5 yr old with NO Warranty left on them. The compressors are 95% of the price of the freezer I figure, if they go bad, I get a bill for $400.00 for parts and labor. My luck would be to buy a CraigsList Freezer and it would run great for 5 month's and then I would loose two batches of beer and a freezer. People ask 2/3 of the new price for a used one on CL and they have no warranty and may be 4 to 9 yrs old. I just decided to go new with a warranty and yes, it is Energy Star rated, supposedly 30 something bucks to run for a year, that's based on freezing, I don't know what to expect at warmer ferm. temps. I still have a bad taste in my mouth from a used upright freezer I bought 10 yrs ago, I paid $150 for it (3yrs old), it ran great until it did not (1 year later) and I was out my $150 and about a 1/4 beef and half a pig. I am looking forward to doing Lagers once I get it all set up, I have to wait for about a month due to moving to a new home, I don't want to transport several fermenters full.
