Induction Burners

Post #1 made 11 years ago
Anyone using induction burners? I've been having a lot of trouble maintaining my mash temps despite wrapping in blankets and insulating the bottom of the kettle. Have no idea why.. but, my thought was to either do a double boiler on the stove or using induction.

Double boiler would require a larger pot to put my kettle in while sitting the kettle on a bread/cake cooling rack.. bringing the water up to something beyond my mash temp and stirring every 10 minutes or so.

Induction heater would be simply placing the kettle on the burner and putting the burner on a low enough setting to keep the mash in the proper range.. while stirring every 10 minutes. With this method, I could still wrap the kettle w/o fear of burning the blanket. My only question here might be scorching.. however, at these low temps and using a triclad pot, I doubt that would happen.

Thoughts?

HbgBill,

I have been considering induction brewing for quite some time now. It works fine but I need a pot with a bottom that will work with induction heating and some rewiring is needed. Both cost money! I am hoping to win a lot of money playing Cheesestradamus so I can pay for it? Search you-tube and the internet.

The guy on Craigtube here uses a portable induction hot plate (I dont think you can buy them in Australia) BUT I think he only does extract and steeping beers which may not be any help. He has a lot of vids so maybe just message him.

Thanks guys.. I'll check Craig out.. He's always a hoot to watch.

Bob, unless you want to go all the way and get one of the 220v versions.. you won't need to rewire.. just a regular 15A circuit.. If I were going to try for a boil, I'd go for that big one. The question I had was to simply use it for mash temp control.

I was watching one of those selling channels on the tube last night where they were selling portable induction cooktops.. the As Seen On TV type infomercials. Target and Walmart both sell the same bookplate for about $99. But, they are alway out.. selling like hotcakes, I guess.

"BUT WAIT", if you buy in the next 15 minutes..... etc etc etc. Well, it turns out that this is the same one selling on those stores.. The "But Wait" part is you get 2 for the price of one.. 3 "easy payments" of $33.33.. and you get a couple of those frypans that are ceramic coated.. at least I think they are.. for easy cleanup.. Only catch is.. you have to pay for extra shipping and handling.. and that is usually a big "gotcha".. I'll call today.. I could use two.. One for the RV and one for brewing.

According to the infomercial.. each time you kick it up a notch, you get 10* more.. and converse for kicking down a notch.

HbgBill,

I was thinking of the 220v and using it in the utility room. I could unplug the clothes dryer and vent it out the dryer exhaust? Hot water there to fill the pot too! No room to maneuver there. tight quarters. The boss will have to let me use her laboratory for a day!

Looks like the cost for the As Seen On TV would be about $200 including shipping for the two burners.. plus you get two heavy duty frying pans plus a heavy duty pot with steamer, etc. I'll have to think on it a bit more. We are always getting coupons for Bed Bath and Beyond.. I think they may carry them.. sooooooo, who knows.

Do you guys have anything like a LIDL supermarket in the USA?

Here in the UK we can get single induction hobs for less than £30 ($40-$50).
I too have thought of using induction but worried about the weight on these single units.
My main hob in the kithcen is induction (has been for about 5 years) so I know a little bit about using them too.

Don't know what a hob is, Mally.. you blokes have weird names for things :D :D
No on the LTDL.. but, there are a number of places to get them.. some as low as about $89 i think. I'm researching the Avantco IC1800 right now.. and it looks FAR better made than the NuWave.. and it gets quite good reports. I want to stick with 120V so I don't have to play with wiring. I've already bought an new piece of electric brewing gear that will have to have 220V wiring.. so, don't want two of those circuits :)

Ha Ha Bill, it is you guys whom have weird names for things

Anyway just for completeness;

this is the logo for Lidl that I meant

This is an induction hob but I guess you may know it as a stove?

Here is an Ebay link to the portable units similar to what Lidl sell here

This unit is only 1.5Kw, but is 120V, the ones in the UK are normally 2Kw or a little more, but obviously at 240V

:luck:

Thanks for the enlightenment and the link.. I always forget about eBay. I bought one from Webstaurant and should be here next week. I'll put off my Oatmeal Stout until it arrives. I COULD probably use a smoker that I have.. but, the inside of a smoker can take on a lot of odors from the meat's smoked in there.. and that MAY not be great. :) I might try brewing a 1 gallon batch, ala Basic Brewing vid casts. They are always doing real small batches. If I put it off, I'll have time to make a new starter.. or make the one I have a bit bigger for the next batch.

Ah yes.. Hob. I knew the word form a couple of references.. I knew about being used as a dwarf or similar.. ala Hobbit. And, coming from a machining background in my earlier day, a hob was a cutting tool for hobbing out gears.. but never knew about it being a stove or cooktop.

Thanks Bob.. I saw the video last week.. Interesting.. just a very plain beer to test the jug. I have one of those jugs that I keep my StarSan mix in.. but that's it.. I have a few 3G better bottles.. along with some 6G BB's

I going to wait until next week to brew the stout I have planned. By that time I think my induction heater should arrive.. otherwise.. I'll put it off again until it does. I did make a single layer of reflectex to put around the turkey fryer and made a piece to fit the lid of the pot as well. Then.. I'll put a sleeping bag over the whole thing after I make sure I have the pH and heat where it should be.

Burner (Hob) SHOULD be here tomorrow.. If so, I'm brewing on Wednesday (or Tues if it arrives early enough). Plenty of yeast.. grain ground.. water dechlorinated.. wife taking mother for a 4 day trip to the Sierras.. good to go.. Only possible glitch is a guy coming to install a new microwave oven on Wed. Argghh. He should be in/out in an hour.

I've just bought a portable 2000W induction cooktop and read through this thread and many others on same topic.

I'm yet to use it (until now I've been using the glass/ceramic radiant stovetop in my kitchen). Will be using a 19L kettle.

So here are some observations, questions and maybe some answers to other people's questions-

The surface of the induction cooktop doesn't get hot (the metal pot is what gets hot, because it is basically acting as the element). So the lack of residual heat on the stovetop might affect how well mash temp is maintained.

My ceramic stove top has been really good at maintaining mash temps (with 2 towels wrapped around, and maybe applying 30 seconds of full heat every 15 minutes while stirring), so I'll be interested to see what happens on my next brew day.

Also, I'm wondering, because the heat would be spread across the entire surface area of the pot, rather than concentrated in the base, that scorching might not be a problem. Or maybe it'll be MORE of a problem? (thoughts???)

The main reasons I bought this induction thing is because of it's portability and also to save my household stove top elements from being over-worked (I've read that 1 hour boils aren't great for the longevity of household stove tops).

I got mine, a Maxkon 2000W because it had been used successfully by other brewers with same kettle as mine, for under AU$50 delivered. From a shop based in Australia (Victoria) on eBay.
