DO you have anything protecting the bag from the heating elements? Will the bag sit on the elements if left by itself? I am not a E-BIAB'er (yet) so I need more detail.
tap 1 Raspberry wine
tap 2 Bourbon Barrel Porter
tap 3 Czech Pilsner
tap 4 Triple IPA 11% ABV

Pipeline: Mulled Cider 10% ABV

AlexnHarvey, Bob is correct, use a "cake cooler rack" to keep the bag off the Element/(bottom of a Kettle), and the bag will NOT scorch/burn.

I do not use anything to keep the bag up off the element during the mash. I set my pid to 5% or so on manual during the mash to maintain mash temps. No burning or scorching. The only time I have had ANY scorching issues is recirculation during mash that caused air pockets to form around the element under the bag. The air pocket allowed the element to get hot and scorch the wort but did not scorch the bag. Now I don't recirculate, Stir a few times and call it good.

Many thanks for your replies. I am not opposed to using a rack to prevent the bag scorching, but I have yet to find one cheaply to fit my 43cm pot. If I can scavenge one I will use it.

I think at ~5% power the elements will not be very hot, and with careful stirring no scorching will occur as the heat will be dissipated.

If you are worried, you can find a pizza pan that has hole in it, put a few stainless bolts to hold it up off the bottom above your element. Cheap solution if you can find the right size. Otherwise, just keep the power low and brew on...
