Fitting kettle elements ?

Post #1 made 12 years ago
Hi all.

I new to AG brewing so I've been getting the equipment together, there were some items on the bay that I was interested in but I thought I would take a walk around the local car boot sale

I came back with a 38l heavy walled aluminium stock pot and two kettles so considering that the wall of the pot is curved what's the best way to fit the elements?

Thanks for you help aamcle

aamcle,

We are starting to get more and more electric BIAB brewers. Maybe they can help? Couldn't you just find the right spot and whack it with a big hammer to flatten the area? Do lots of research before doing that!
tap 1 Raspberry wine
tap 2 Bourbon Barrel Porter
tap 3 Czech Pilsner
tap 4 Triple IPA 11% ABV

Pipeline: Mulled Cider 10% ABV

I've built a couple of electric pots. While I was always concerned about the curvature of the pot causing sealing problems, it never has! I believe that the pot wall will flex as necessary to complete the seal. The important part is to make a clean hole, no bigger than it absolutley has to be. I use a chassis punch which results in a hole that is ever slightly too small and then open it up as necessary with a file. Using a standard water heater element, I install it with this nut kit, using the nut & o-ring on the inside of the kettle and wrapping the threads on the element with a few turns of pipe tape, nothing on the outside (I discard the rubber gasket that comes with the heater element).

Good luck and feel free to ask more questions!

I built mine with two 1500w kettle elements 10 pound for two kettles. I did tap around the hole with a hammer to flatten it slightly. I will probably beef it up with water heater elements when the kettle ones die but they work fine i start with hot tap water to speed the heating up.
The beer I had for breakfast was'nt bad so I had one more for dessert!
