AFAIK the guy in question is Eionmag on this forum, try PM'ing him.

I find that a circle of voile, hemmed round the edge, does a great job instead of a bag, but you really do need a skyhook / pulley otherwise it could get disastrously out of hand.

Many thanks guys. Ironically, two minutes (possibly less) after sending that post last night an email popped in to my inbox last night. So I am now one step further to BIAB!! Once the bag arrives, then I will just need to work out the quantities for my first brew!!

Okay so now I need to start looking at calculating my ingredients. Can someone recommend a good beer calculator for th mac, preferably free? And how do I go about working out how many litres of water I will need to start with to end up with a 23litre brew? I realise these are newbie questions but we all got to start somewhere!

One note of caution: I used the BIABrewer calculator and Beersmith; both gave me an initial volume of about 43 litres. However my evaporation rate was a lot less than those allowed for and I ended up 10 litres over! (I boiled in a 60 litre bucket with one 2.2KW element running.)

Hmm yes this is what I'm struggling with a bit. How do I know what evaporation rate to expect so that I know how much liquid to start with? Without knowing that, it is difficult to use these calculator (or am I missing the point completely?)

Good Day again. Scott, I forgot, our OLD Guys equation...to get the Full volume BAIB volume start with
(desired bottling volume) + ((.1Qt per pound of grain) OR (1.9Litre per Kg of grain)) X 1.25(for a 60 minute boil and trub Loss)
This is a ballpark/soccer-field equatuion.

The calculator makes a guesstimate based on your pot diameter. If your boil is weak or strong it will miss tho.

The idea is you update the boiloff rate for future calculations

You can do a wet run with water. If you boil for 30 mins this will give you an idea. Good idea to boil your bag and test everything with water anyway :)

Post away Scott. You may want to start a new thread in this section Here.
