Wrong hops?

Post #1 made 15 years ago
I brewed my 5th BIAB a couple of days ago, a Rye Ale. I put it into the fermenter today, checked the OG and had a little sip. It was very bitter. The original recipe (which was for 18 litres I think) had a hop bill of 20g Cluster @ 60 mnins, 25g Columbus @ 20 mins and 25g Columbus @ 0. Because of the AA level of the hops I thought at the time that the original recipe poster (not sure where I got it from) may have got the hops around the wrong way. For 23 litres I upped it to 22, 26 and 26. Will this turn out alright, or will I have to bite a lemon every time I have a drink to sweeten things up?

That'll be no problems Bob. Beers in the early stage of fermentation often taste bitter/harsh so ride it out :).

(Haven't forgotten you btw on that other thing - just a bit short on time / daylight saving time. My apologies.)
If you have found the above or anything else of value on BIABrewer.info, consider supporting us by getting some BIPs!

Hey Bob what was our target OG? I calculated your IBU with an OG of 1.044 and the IBU= 42. This was for full boil that ended in 18L of wort. If you let me know more details about the brew I can help you get a more exact calculation.

Hi CS,
I guess it was your recipe that I hijacked, thanks. Target OG was 1.048. I achieved 1.045 and according to the calculator an IBU of 30. Since that brew I discovered that my figures for urn diameter and volume were a bit out. I have become much more meticulous with my record keeping since so will have to see what I come up next time I make this. I really enjoyed the beer, not nearly as bitter as I thought it would be.
