Half the hops ... Damn it

Post #1 made 11 years ago
I brewed a Kolsch tonight but it wasn't until I was putting in the OG that I noticed on BIABacus somehow I had put entries in the hop substitute rows at twice the AA% (must be reuse error).

Now I have a Kolsch that will only have 14 IBUs approximately. I haven't pitched the yeast yet and won't for 8 hours.

I'd there anything I can do to correct the IBUs? Or should I just pitch it and chalk it up to a brew error?

BungBrew,

Kolsch is a bright and light beer. If you need more IBU's just ferment the beer as instructed and add more hops when the fermentation is completed. You dry hop and get aroma without the bitterness. Kolsch is a favorite of mine. It needs little hops but in my book. There is no such thing as "too much hops"!
tap 1 Raspberry wine
tap 2 Bourbon Barrel Porter
tap 3 Czech Pilsner
tap 4 Triple IPA 11% ABV

Pipeline: Mulled Cider 10% ABV

I see this has come and gone a couple of weeks ago, but in case someone else ever has this problem I think you could look at a couple of solutions. Since you hadn't pitched yet, you could have done a small hop boil - e.g. make up a few L of wort, or even better, use some of your wort, do a small boil with bittering/ flavour additions. I would think a 20-30 min boil would be ideal as a quick fix. It could take things off-style but dry-hopping will add some bitterness although not necessarily IBUs.

14 seems crazy light
