Regular recipes .... what do you brew?

Post #1 made 13 years ago
This morning I'm revisiting my first BIAB recipe as it went down so well last time.

I haven't been brewing for very long (only since March) but I have so far brewed a chocolate stout, a wheat beer, a porter, a ruby honey ale, 3 bitters and a pils.

I am now, as previously mentioned, brewing my first beer again.

Although I have enjoyed all the beers I've brewed, my favourite is the first. I guess that was why I chose that recipe to brew before any others.

It got me thinking how many people find a few favourites and stick to them and how many never brew the same beer twice?

I think I will stick to a couple of "house brews" and continue with "guest beers" to expand my "beer cook book" and experience.

This seems to be the way to go for me, what do other brewers do?

Regular recipes .... what do you brew?

I agree that you tend to go back to your favorites. After 4 years of kit and partial mash brewing I found there were a couple of types I always had on hand.

Then came BIAB! I just completed my fourth BIAB last night. I already know that I will re brew my first BIAB IPA on a regular basis as the results were great! And given that I am partial to bitters, I will do an ordinary bitter over the next couple of weeks that will make up my second "go to" beer.

I have a list of recipes to choose from - so much to brew - so little time!

Great question, Adman! I have a few "house favourites" that I brew on a regular rotation but I also enjoy creating recipes and trying new techniques. I've recently procured a few 3 gallon kegs and have moved to smaller batches (so I can brew more often).

I've been buying lots of different craft beers and I've decided that the main thing I like is session beers that are brown to pale, lightly hopped. So I tend to brew these on a regular basis. Nut brown ale, cream ale, and an orange honey wheat are my top ones so far. Otherwise I try different things to see how they turn out. I love to cook and to me brewing is cooking. I make stuff up as I go along. I'm a chemical engineer so keeping great records, data, measurements: that's what I do at work. At home I'm a freelancer who just has fun. At the end of the day ... it is beer.

I have a few regulars including Little Creatures Pale Ale inspired beer, a Little Creatures Bright Ale clone, Beachbum's whale ale wheat beer and an English Bitter. I find it important to repeat recipies in order to have a point of reference for refining brewing techniques and ingredients. Besides that I love those beers.

I think you hit it right on there. You need to see if your results are repeatable in order to hone your skills. For me, I'm fine as long is the beer is good, but feel a bit more success if my brew matches up with a previous version!

Still exploring but definitely have my favourites and I'm not very adventurous. Lager, pilsner, schwarzbier, blonde ale, APA and IPA are my usuals. The APA (NRB's All Amarillo Pale Ale) I use as a house beer to monitor any changes in brewing methods. It's very easy to get rid of that one ;).

I seem to always have a hoppy pale on the go as well as a stout of some kind. I've made a Burton Bridge Top Dog stout numerous times and It goes down a treat with friends. The pales that i brew I tend to experiment and find it's hard to go too wrong so rarely stick to the same recipe.
