Two brews this weekend. BIAB Graff and APA.

Post #1 made 15 years ago
I got a graff in on Saturday, which I've been threatening to put on for a long time now, and I just pitched the yeast on an APA of sorts.

Recipe for the graff was as follows.

20l Lidl pure apple juice (1.5l cartons)
5l Campden treated water
1.5kg Light Spraymalt
750g Dark Crystal malt
30g Fuggles hops
1 Pack Coopers Ale Yeast, left over from my kit days.

Did a steep with the grains BIAB style in the pot, then a 30 minute boil with the hops and added malt at end to melt it.
Pitched this with the apple juice in a bucket and sprinkled the yeast on top.
It's already got a nice head on it since this morning so it's fermenting away.

Today I did an APA in the large boiler.
I came close to my OG, but diluted a with 4l tap water just to get back to where I wanted to be volume wise, evaporation was more than expected.
I rehydrated the yeast before pitching 3 packs of US-05.
The grain bill was made up of bits and bobs that needed using apart from the pils malt. The wort tastes nice and bitter and after a week in the fermenter I'm going to dry hop with about 30g or more cascade.
This is one to keep the wife happy, I'm not such the APA fan but I've promised to make her one for a while now.

Is a graff a cider version of a Braggott (which is honey based) ?? I know that one of the micro breweries in Tasmania incorporates 10% apple juice in their normal beers so they obviously go together.

Sorry I didn't get to reply to this earlier, didn't see that actually. This batch of graff didn't actually turn out that good, it's still in the keg maybe my brother will like it this Xmas, he's a major cider drinker. I found actually that this one is too beery and will replace half the DME next time with honey so that it's not so beery.

It's drinkable and not bad, but not as good as the last graff that I did but then the juice isn't as good as the one I used last time either.
