recipe conversion: hop bill questions

Post #1 made 10 years ago
Hi,

I'm converting a recipe from Charlie Papazian's book "Microbrewed Adventures". The only guidance on volumes is: "I've adapted nearly all of the recipes to fit a 5-gallon (19 l) batch format.". He assumes 85% "grain conversion efficiency".

I'm wondering what folks have used for the hop bill section for VAW ? My calculation using the BIABacus indicates that the 19 l batch format equates to VIF, so have set VAW to 20 l.

The recipe lists all hop additions as whole hops, so the original hop bill gets "FL". I plan on using pellets, so the substituted hop bill has 'blank' entries for Form, and I'm not convinced that the BIABacus is making the necessary adjustment for pellets over whole hops. Thoughts?

Thanks,
BDP

BDP, could you Post the .XLS???

I have checked a few of My Recipes, in version "T" and the is a 10-12% difference in the Weight(grams) between FL and "space" not Del Blank.

I mean enter a "Space" instead of "Delete the Cell".

Hey joshua :)

The attached file is the one I fudged to calculate the VAW:
  • Auto kettle efficiency = 85%
    KFL = 0 l
    FPL = 0 l
When desired VIF = 19 l, then grain bill matches (almost) the original recipe.

Note the hop bill amounts are the same as the original hop bill, even though the substitution 'Form' field has a 'space' character. By comparison, if you blank the original and FL the substitution hop, the substitution weight does increase as expected.

I'm sure I'm doing something wrong, but for the life of me can't put my finger on it.

BDP, you are correct. At present, if the original recipe has flowers and you will be using pellets, you have to type PE on the right hand side. If left as blank, it assumes you will be using whatever is on the left hand side.

Of course, there is no way that you could know this with the current set-up. I'm a bit stuck atm on how to get around this design problem but I'm sure we'll come up with something.

:pray:
Pat

Note: The only solution so far is to change the bottom line of Section D to Hop Forms: Blank/PE = Pellets. Not great but it will do the job.

Any consensus on VAW for these recipes from "Microbrewed Adventures" ? Alternatively, I could use the recipes's IBU rating of 32 in Section D, but then there's the whole Rager vs. Tinseth question, and I don't know which one these recipes use to measure IBU.

Cheers

Your logic/process in post #3 is perfect BDP :clap:. So set your VAW to 19 L.

Not sure where the VAW of 20 L in post #1 came from.

Is it clear to you now why 19 L is the best guess?

...

Colour can be another way of deducing/detecting/making an educated guess at VAW.

Now that you made me think about it, yes it is :). I'm going to blame my lapse in reasoning on the 9% ABV (homebrewed) stout I was sipping on at the time :drink:

Thanks!
