Funky mold in my NC cube

Post #1 made 13 years ago
Hi all,

I opened up my little 5L NC cube today.
When I brewed last, I thought I should put the last bit of my kettle in it for starters. Great idea, was a bit of a rushed idea though.
Today (about 6 weeks later), I thought I'd split it up into 500mL lots for easier management and to feed into my current starter.

I saw what is attached!
It looks like mold but it didn't smell bad. When I stretched it out a bit it looked like the underneath of a field mushroom. The wort smelled really nice but I didn't want to risk it so down the drain it went

Any thoughts on this?

Even though it was a last minute idea, the cube was cleaned and sanitised (it's how I store them all from new) and I put it on the side while hot once the lid was on.
When looking at the cube before I opened it, I could see some floaties on the top but passed it off as hops, now I know better!
Oh yeah, the cube wasn't swollen either!

Good Day I have had the exact same goop on the bottom of some bottles, that I forgot to clean last Fall(Northern Hemisphere), I think it is what DEAD BEER looks like.
I found that it can come alive in a fermenter and ruin an entire batch, so check yours to see if it happened.

Housecat,

Whatever it is (moldus-in-a-beerus?) it probably wouldn't kill you?? I had the same thing growing in my taps. When I disassembled them I thought whoa, "What the hell is this"? Fried in butter with eggs it was great! I now clean my taps frequently. After using my cube I wash, rinse and store a liter or two of star-san in the cube. The day of the brew I shake it and flip sides and lean it upside down. Anything to coat the sides with star-san. I love mushrooms but some of it I can do without!

I've had the same mushrooms grow in bottles, back before I was kegging.
Strange thing was I had drunk the beer before I noticed the mushrooms.
Didn't do me any harm :)

So, should housecat ditch that cube?

Maybe we could pruduce and market Beer Mushrooms. One more reason to have a beer with breakfast! :argh:

I'm gonna try salvage it, I'm in the middle of nuking it lots of hot water and PBW followed by a heap of Starsan.

The little 5L cubes cost as much as the 20L ones so I reckon it's worth at least one shot at saving it. I have put an X on it and the lid just so I know which one it was.

I inspected the 20L cube I made of this, incidentally it's the cube I have set aside for the aging experiment I'm doing (watch out for the thread), and there is no sign of any infection or even air bubbles in it so I am happy it is an isolated incident!

If problems persist, try bleach too.

thanks, I'll add that to my list for cleaning this cube. I may as well do it before I use it again.

How much bleach would you use?

Just pour in a good quantity of undiluted bleach. Slowly turn the cube over a period of hours so that each surface gets a good soaking, then give it a hell of a good shake. Pour off the bleach (I put it back into the original container for a few more uses} and then rinse until you have no more foam (yes, bleach does foam when shaken). That should kill anything, but if you get them same infection next time ditch the cube.
