Hole size is kind of critical for the element and a step bit doesn't seem to make the grade. I bought a used punch on ebay (not cheap but I and several friends have made good use of it) but heard tell that the punch set from Harbor Freight is good for a couple of holes before you have to throw it away.

I am very interested in this thread. Funkhouse, you are doing exactly what I want to do.

The idea of brewing without open flame has lots of pluses for me. Ive been researching it for some time.

Thughes, is it necessary to have some type of "controller", or can the thing be plugged right in? As a do it yourselfer, the only thing I dont feel confident in is making a controller.

Electric brewing is awesome!!!

Gotta have some means of control, especially with a 240V rig. A simple PWM will do (pulse width modulator....Google it) or you can purchase a pre-built controller such as something like Bill is going with from HighGravity.

I'm no electrical engineer but building a simple controller is easily within the skill set of anybody capable of tying thier own shoes. There are plenty of how-to's available. Good luck!

It's done. I've brewed with my new electric brewery and I love it. The speed, the simplicity, the ease of cleanup, the size: it is everything I hoped it would be.

I documented the entire build here on Instructables.com.

Feel free to comment here or there.. THANK YOU so much to everyone who gave me so much valuable advice. Oh, and happy new year.
