World's smallest "nano" BIAB... Proof of concept.

I was having a lousy weekend.. And I still have an extract batch in the (primary) fermenter... But just got a cheapo "Corona" mill.. Decided to get it into the 5-gallon bucket and get it hooked to the cordless drill and adjust the grind. The LHBS sold me a couple of "bag ends" for about half price to proof the mill.

I got the grind correct after about 1 Oz. of grain ground. Being cheap and never wanting to waste anything... I stuck the paint strainer bag with the grain (I went coarser to finer so I wasted very little) in 160 °F (I am American, sorry) and made 10 oz. of wort by reheating the coffee cup every 20 minutes for 30 seconds and then at about 75 minutes I mashout-ed the cup by nuking it for a minute. I then sparged the bag in another cup at 120°F for about 10 min. 0.85 oz of grain in 10 fl oz water measured with the corrected refractometer 1.020 SG. According to Brewers Friend app max was 1.025 for American 2 row pale (what I had) in that situation. So I did 79% efficient extraction... In a coffee cup... In a couple of weeks I think this method will work quite well on a few gallons... ;)

I am looking forward to it. This is fun. I didn't get many likes on the brewing pages on Facebook with this experiment. $US32 for the mill setup, $4 for the bag... 79% efficient... Less than half the cost of extract... ;)

That is almost how the European Brewing Congress determines the diastatic power of grain.

If you try to brew a 1 gallon Mash, and have the usual wort loss, you should have enough fermented beer for a 6-pack or 1/48th Barrel.

You will Find All-Grain brewing, to be Very Cheap, and if your good getting Hops and Bulk Grains, you can Fill a case of "used" beer bottles for around $7.00US.

Welcome to the forum InsanitySix,

Good to see you enjoying yourself .

If you are looking t doing small batches, aiming for a few gallons into fermentor is probably the smallest size to aim for otherwise the weight of hops and yeast you have to measure out becomes really hard to measure. You'll find the stockpot more fun than the coffee pot :P.

All the best,
PP

PistolPatch, Maybe the Drug Police have shut down AussieLand, But in America we have Access to Inexpensive Pocket size scales that Measure 0.1gr to 1000gr...

http://www.amazon.com/American-Weigh-Sc ... B0012N1NAA

Drug Scales, are very useful for Hops, like this one 100gram x 0.01gr

www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B0012LOQUQ

They are cheap in America, not Extremely accurate, but, did I say Cheap.

I've got the drug scales Josh but I stand by my post above ;).

Even if using pellet hops, having a batch which requires only a few grams of hops on an addition is going to lead to some pretty wild results as well as being a lot of work for not much beer :dunno:.
