1st BIAB: American Nut Brown Ale

Post #1 made 15 years ago
I brewed my first biab Saturday  I want to thank all the people that formed and run this site for the information I gathered from it.

The bag dimension formula was very useful along with the fabric material, voile, that is listed. I need to dial-in my boil off rate. I went from a super-wide kettle (over 8 L evap. rate/hr) to a narrow one. I had to boil for over 3 hours to get it down. :headhit: I installed a sight glass. There's little info on the net about the wort boiling in it. I had problems with it the whole time, wort dancing and shooting over the top. I know now, after lots of searching, that a heat shield is needed. Hope to have less drama next time. I'm also looking to get a pulley.

I'm sure somebody has won a medal with this one.

Note: I have brewed 2 BIAB's now. This recipe above was my first and is still in the fermenter. I have made it two other times with a 2v setup. My 2nd BIAB efficiency was 80%, 1st BIAB probably was also.

Nice job. Pictures are super. Your mastery of the boil off time will come with experience. No worries there. Keep it up and keep brewing. Practice makes perfect (and beer).
tap 1 Raspberry wine
tap 2 Bourbon Barrel Porter
tap 3 Czech Pilsner
tap 4 Triple IPA 11% ABV

Pipeline: Mulled Cider 10% ABV

That's what I love about this hobby... realistically, it's hard to make a *bad* beer.. so even if your new recipe or equipment or procedure doesn't get you exactly what you were expecting, you still have 5 gallons of beer that's as good and still often better than what's sitting on the shelf at the local grocery.
Brew, blues and blood.

Congrats! You and I are at pretty much the same place on the learning curve. I think just getting used to our equipment, our burner, and our boil-off rates, the consistency will be there.

Hope your first beer turns out as good as mine did!
