I popped my AG BIAB cherry!

Post #1 made 15 years ago
Yesterday I did my first BIAB. must say it was a good day and I learnt a few things about following instructions and my equipment too.

I have already written a post on it HERE at AHB.

I printed out the checklist and the calculator and used them for instruction and note taking. They really made the day a LOT simpler to work through. A big thanks to the authors of them  definitely a valuable bit of kit for anyone's first few BIAB's.

Top job hc,
Your right about the checklist, I use it every brew. It makes it easy to keep track of processes, records and notes.
Let us know how it turns out as I have that recipe on my to do list
Cheers wiz

Thanks Wiz,

My biggest problem of the day was not believing the software and how much water I should have started out with. Now I have all my losses sorted out, although, I still wouldn't have had enough left over but it would have only been 4L out instead of 8L. (my aim was 46L out of the kettle I only got 38L @ 1.064) will have to top it off when it's time to ferment.

Congratulations cat! Throw your pics up here as no one can see them in your link unless they are a member of AHB.

And a double batch to start with :P :salute:

No probs, here is a photographic record of how the day looked :)

My homemade bag and 80L keggle (i don't like that word but it does describe it well!!)

Standard Mash pic

My Brew bench and notes (what's the point of notes if you don't follow them?)
Image
Draining the bag. I miscalculated the size of the bucket but it worked well enough. I also need to adjust my bag so I can get it out of the kettle with out dripping down the sides!

More photo fun

Getting my hop additions ready.
Image
Also thought I'd give the dirty 'No Chill' a shot too.
Image
Seems a little too easy. then I realised that I won't have enough to fill both my cubes.
Image
21L in one and 17L in the other.
Image
I took note of all my losses and will adjust accordingly for next time I brew.

Sorry for such a long post!

Any input would be highly appreciated

Thanks PP,

I thought that a double can't be that much harder than a single and I got all the equipment purposely to do doubles so, it seemed logical to do one straight up!

Glad I did and am ready to do another as soon as I can (I unfortunately have a backlog of K&K beers to get through first  )

K&k, the bane of AG brewers :) When I did my first batch of AG BIAB (Schwartzbier) I still had a full keg of k&k, I ended up watering the garden with it. Compared to the AG brew, it was just crap.

Great post on your maiden BIAB cat.
