I don't know if you've toasted oatmeal before but anyways, one piece of advice: stir, check, stir, check, stir. Babysit those grains, they go from golden to dark VERY quickly. I just did a strong oatmeal stout with 2# of toasted oats and it was awesome!

yeah I sat right by the oven the whole time. My wife thought I was nuts. They came out a nice golden brown and filled the kitchen with a toasty oatmeal cookie aroma..

Be prepared, I don't know if you manual remove your bag or use a hoist but it will be considerably heavier than a typical grain batch, those oats soak up a lot of wort. Still doable, I had 13# of grains with 2# of them oatmeal and did it without a hoist...but it does take longer to drain.

hehe.. I'll have my 17 year old son lift it... wait.. he's a wimp.. I'll lift it and have him slide the colander and 5 gallon stock pot under it.

with 70 minutes of mash time complete. Iodine check shows conversion is complete. I'll give it another 15 minutes then start raising the temp to mash out

lol.. it's true.. he's lazy too (still in bed after promising to get up and help me brew)... he'll even admit it. now my oldest boy is 19.. he'll lift anything I tell him to. But he's leaving for the Air Force in a little over a month and spent the night with a "friend"..
mash completed.. FWH hopping started.. grain bag draining over 5 gallon pot.. sample cooling so I can see how close to pre-boil gravity I got.
on another note.. my Honey Red ale tastes great!! just needs to condition a little longer to get enough CO2 to develop a head.

pre-boil gravity is 1.046 (temp corrected) I was shooting for 1.052.. of course that was a planned 6.5 gallons into the boiler. ended up squeezing a lot more from teh grains than planned so I got 7.5 gallons. oh well, I'll just boil a little longer.

OG ended up at 1.059.. 72% efficiency not bad.. was hoping for the 77% I had last time.. tasted pretty good before I pitched the yeast (didn't take long to no-chill with the outside temps at 26F)
