My brewing "log".

Hoy,

Thought I should post my first brew since I joined up on this forum. A split batch single hopped low ABV APA.

The grain bill is a downgraded version of my favorite norwegian APA, Voss Oregonian.

Pale Ale Malt 92%
Vienna 4%
Munich 4%

I'm aiming at 3,6 % ABV. Fermenting both with WLP028, since Voss Oregonian is most probably fermented with that yeast, or something similar. I've made a clone with that yeast before, and I love it. I find that it gives some fruity esthers, similar to other british yeasts, and according to White Labs it doesn't supress hop flavors. It doesn't attenuate that much, so I belive it's going to work well with a low OG beer, and give me some malt sweetnes. I belive it's going to be one of my favorite yeast strains.

Since both hops are high on the alpha acid, hopping proved to be a challenge. I want both beers to have a heavy hop presence, taste and aroma.

5min 10g
2min 50g
1min 100g
dry 90g

Edit: Single hopping one with Mosaic and the other with Nelson Sauvin.

Just over 30 IBU, and I belive that should be bitter enough in this beer.

And now it's time to run out and get the first batch into the fermenter.

And the first screw up. Wasn't using BIABacus all the way, so I didn't catch the 7 liter Kettle to Fermentor loss. I have way less loss than that, or I'm rather uncritical to adding trub into my fermentor. So OG is 1.044 instead of 1.037. Could've just added more water, but I'm to lazy to bottle the surplus that doesn't go in the keg. So the beer will have a bit more punch, and I could've added more hops. But I'm content, I guess my brewing motto should be Que sera, sera.

Today I'm brewing my attempt at a coconut porter (viewtopic.php?f=43&t=3318). It's been a very cold spring, so today is one of our first "summer" days. So I'm brewing outside.

I've mashed in, so now I'm waiting and tweaking the coconut addition. Got organic coconut, and a whole coconut. Haven't decided what I'm going to add into the sweet-wort, or what amounts

Hi David, nice pics, one thing I'm not understanding is why your kettle to fermentor loss would affect your OG? Original gravity should stay more or less the same after the boil, no matter how much trub you dump in your fermentor. In any case, I'm sure it will turn out to be great beer! :)

I wasn't using BIABacus all the way last recipe. Just checked what it said about into boil efficency. So those 7 liters of waste, was much less, wort was more concentrated as well.

Today I used BIABacus blindly. Mash temperature was a little on the low side, so I guess I need to adjust that. It landed at 65,5 deg C instead of 68 deg C. OG of 1,049, goal was 1,050. I'm happy with that. Volume wise, a little bit more than 24L in the fermentor, recipe says 26L. Today I stopped transfering early, I didn't want to get too much coconut into the fermentor. Trub and loss about 6 liters. So the evaporation and loss rate in BIABacus suits my setup well.

Ah ok, I misunderstood, thought you were relating one to the other. Let us know how that coconut porter turns out, I've never tried one but perhaps I will brew one someday... I've got a cherry saison and a pineapple IPA on my next to brew list myself :)

I will do. Kegging the 2 APAs in a few days. Guess I will have my first bottle of the porter in july.

Cherry Saison sounds really interesting. I've been thinking about cherry fruit beer for some time, but I don't think I'll do it this year.

My Coconut Porter is long gone now. IMO it could've had loads more coconut flavour in it. Some ppl noticed the taste at once, others never found the flavour. But when you say it is a porter, everyone thinks about what is probably the norm, robust porter. So I got a lot of comments like it's not sweet enough, it doesn't have long enough aftertaste, even if it's a "maxed" out brown porter. But it would probably been better as a medium robust porter, so going in that direction next time.
