Sharps Golden Citrus Ale - First Biab

Post #1 made 11 years ago
Hi Everyone

The grain pack I used (link below)... I chose the Safale S-04 option
http://www.brewuk.co.uk/ingredients/ing ... -pack.html

Well I've brewed my first Biab now and it's in the fermenter in my fermentation fridge at 18 - 20 degrees bubbling away nicely. The brew went well I think for my first one and I used biabacus for all my working out (That takes some getting used to). I kept the mash between 65.5 and 67 degrees for the 90 minutes, drained & squeezed the grain bag then boiled for 60 min to the instructions adding hops when required, then chilled with my copper coil chiller to 22.4 degrees in 25 minutes. The target gravity is 1.050 and I hit 1.050 - 1.052 but I only ended up with 20.5 litres of wort and not the 23 litres the recipe says which is probably why I hit the OG. With the full volume I'm sure the OG would be considerably lower. I think I got my evaporation rate wrong & I lost more during the boil than I expected. My efficiency worked out at 74% but overall I'm happy with the outcome for my first brew. In hindsight, next time I think I will dunk sparge the grain bag and add the sparge water to the boil to get the volume up, but you live & learn I suppose. I really enjoyed doing this brew & I'm looking forward to drinking this.

I've put the photo's I took of my brewday here... http://s1232.photobucket.com/user/swift ... 21-04-2015

Any advice for my next brew is welcome too!

I've got a Vanilla Porter grain pack to do in the next few weeks

Cheers for now

Congrats on the first brew! Best advice I can probably give for your upcoming brews is to skip the 'grain packs' and just find a high integrity recipe you want to brew. Put that recipe in BIABacus if it is not already in that form, and change the desired volume into fermentor to whatever you desire. It will then tell you exactly how much grain and hops you will need for the brew instead of ordering a grain kit that somebody else deemed the correct amounts...

Let us know how this one turns out when its ready!

Cheers mate! I've got one more grain pack to do as I ordered two, so I'll brew that while I do some more research on my own recipe.

I'll update this thread once it is ready to drink

Hey SwiftG40,

The Brewing Classic Styles is a great book if you want lots of good recipes. And the recipes are easily scalable if you want them a little lighter or heavier in body... This way is a great intermediate step between buying a kit from someone else and actually designing your own recipe!

Best of luck!

Thanks for that Scott I'll have a look at that book!

This brew has had eight days fermenting and been in secondary for eight days now so I'm going to put 2 Gal in a pressure barrel and bottle the rest tonight. I'm going to try and aim for 2 Vol of carbonation & hope for the best
