First BIAB complete!

Post #1 made 14 years ago
WooHoo! Just finished my first biab on Monday, and all went well. Except for my target OG. I was off by a bit, but for my second brew overall, I just want it to come out like beer, unlike my stout.

I'll worry about the numbers on the next batch now that I have the process down. Not bad at all. In fact, I thought the biab method was incredibly easy. Turns out, with a 28 quart pot, and 12.5 lbs. of grain, I can start with 6 gallons of water without spillage. I need to find a better way to squeeze the bag though. I did a dunk sparge as well, but I don't think I got the extraction I wanted.

Fermentation was WILD for 36 hours. Still getting a bubble or two occasionally from the blow off tube. Can't wait to bottle this bad boy and try it.

Happy New Year everyone!!!

Congrats sg,
Just remember not to get hung up to much on numbers, even after a few batches it still isn't essential unless you get some numbers that are wildly out.
I'm sure it will turn out great.

If you want some more feedback on your numbers just post up your estimated figures and what figures you ended up with and we can tell you for sure not to worry.

Congrats again and don't forget to keep us updated on how it turns out.

Cheers

Good on you SG, there's nothing better than making beer, enjoying the process and enjoying the beer :)

As Wizard has already said, don't get hung up on numbers, Good efficiency numbers come from good brewing practices and these can only come with time and experience. When I first started I was getting ~70% end of boil and was trying my guts out to make it better. Now I get ~82% end of boil and it's a piece of piss. Time and knowledge are your friend, relax, enjoy the beer and good numbers will come.

I try not to get too hung up on numbers, but I like to be close. My projected OG was 1.040, but came out closer to 1.034.

I don't think that's too far off, and I don't even know I would be able to tell the difference. The final OG SHOULD be around 1.010 or lower, so we'll see what happens in a couple of weeks.

Thanks for the encouragement guys!

What were your numbers?

How much grain did you start with. How much strike did you use

What was your start of boil volume and gravity?

End of boil volume and gravity?
