First Biab and AG

Post #1 made 14 years ago
HI all just put together my first brew yesterday and used Brewmate, Beersmith2 and The calculator as a comparison to see how they all panned out.Turns out the calculator from here was just about spot on, very very close so Id just like to say a big thanks to PP for the calculator and this site for helping new and more advanced brewers alike. So much info and plenty of helpful replies for new brewers like myself, can't wait for my second brew day, cheers.

Congrats to you sj . I hope the day went well and was 'incident-free' :P.

Well done also on working out how to drive three different programs - that isn't easy. Glad to hear the existing calculator served you well. The new one has input from several people so should be a little more flash and easier to use.

What did you brew btw?

:peace:

Hi Pete, i asked some of the experienced guys on AHB and put down the following:

4800gms Thomas Fawcett perle Ale
200gms caramunich1
20gms POR @ 60
15 gms POR @ 10
US 05
half a tab whirlfloc @ 10
temp controlled @ 18 and will gelatine and Polycar in around 10 days once i drop the temp for 24hrs.

Had plenty of mishaps but all in all thoroughly enjoyed it and it smelt great at the end.Used a 4 ring burner and cutoff keg and no chilled into a cube.It will be good when my stash of kit brew bottles is gone altogether and my first AG is cracked in a month or so.Cant wait for my next brew, thinking something similar like
4800gms TF ale
200gms BB caramalt
POR for bittering and mabee use same at the end or try introducing something else but not too sure as yet, need more research and experience plus a good plan of what i want, cheers.

That should be a very easy-drinking beer and will probably disappear very quickly :P. You better do another brew next weekend .

On your next brew, you can try skipping the gelatine and polyclar and see how you go by naturally letting the beer settle out. Often, you can get perfectly clear beers without having to do anything which saves a bit of mucking around.

Let us know how it all turns out sj. :peace:

POR is an abbreviation for the Australian hop variety known as Pride of Ringwood. When it was released back in the 1960's it was the hop with the highest alpha acid content in the world :).

It's pretty much a requirement to make an Aussie style beer

I've never really liked it myself.

It apparently has some wild Tasmanian hop genes in it
