First BIAB & All Grain Under My Belt

Post #1 made 14 years ago
Hi Guy's, Well, I finally did it. I have gone over to the dark side. I did my first ALL GRAIN and it was the BIAB method. Thanks for all the information I found on this site, it helped greatly. I have been reading up on BIAB so much that when I finally did it last Saturday July 2, 2011 that I really had no worries and was very comfortable with the process thanks to the information on this site. I did the Krispy Kolsch recipe and it turned out great, the only thing that worried me at all was the fact that I ended up with 7.5 gallons into my primary, I think I had a much less evaporation level due to using a Keggle instead of a Straight Sided Pot with a larger diameter, that the recipe was designed for. I did get complete conversion and I hit my OG within 0.001, I figured I must have done pretty good on my efficiency to get that close with the extra gallon into the primary. I did use the Excel Spreadsheet and from what I gathered, I hit 72% Efficiency. I am not a hundred percent confident though that I entered everything correctly, since it was my first time. Any way, the Beer was just transfered to my secondary and it is very clean and smells very good, I can't wait to taste it, I will leave it in the secondary for 2 weeks, then bottle age it for about 2 weeks before I try my first one to see if it's carbonated yet.

Well done DABEER, it's really not very hard, is it?

Sounds like it was a very successful brew day. And what a bugger that you will have an extra gallon of beer to drink :) Better invite some mates around.

Well done and welcome to the world of all grain brewing.

Congratulations DaBeer!

It sounds like your first brew was a winner. Brew again as soon as you can to burn it into memory. Better yet have your next brew ready to reuse the yeast cake from your Krispy Kolsch. "Waste not, want not"!
tap 1 Raspberry wine
tap 2 Bourbon Barrel Porter
tap 3 Czech Pilsner
tap 4 Triple IPA 11% ABV

Pipeline: Mulled Cider 10% ABV

Thanks guy's. I am looking forward to the next one already. I am going to do the Amarillo Pale Ale next, I have not had a Hoppy beer for a while and that sounds good with the hot weather here for the summer. Although this BIAB technique does have it's negatives. I don't have enough bottles :idiot: I will have to go out and get some more now. Darn, I hate spending time at the Brew store. Have a good one guy's.

And then a few more fermenting fridges to keep the supply once your friends realise you have more beers on tap than the local pub ;)
