Good on you Lylo    .

Thought there might be enough BIABrewers here in Perth to justify a BIAB-focussed brew day but it's not looking that way. I better rustle up some of the experienced brew dayers .

Just a quick heads up...

Entry forms for the Royal Perth Beer Show are due in by Friday 21st September. You can enter online here.

Beers are due by Thursday 1st November.

If you enter a beer, you get two free tickets to the Exhibitors Tasting at the showgrounds on Saturday 10 th November. This is always great!

If you are going along, let us know and we can meet up there for a beer.

Hope you got your entry in Lukas - the free tickets are worth it.

The entry form is pretty confusing but they are really helpful and Cecilia will contact you if you make a mistake. (I got the categories right but couldn't understand what was needed in the style guideline section at all ).

I have some eyesight problems atm so won't be able to post much here for a while. Hope to see a few of you there though .

Post #58 made 14 years ago
Yeah you do get 2 tickets :)
I entered 3 beers this year, so I made sure to enter one under my brothers name for the extra tickets ;) At $20/entry I really don't feel like I'm cheating at all.

Did anyone enter anything in the WASABC?

Remember, entries due next week on Thursday - (November 1st).

I'll be dropping mine in on the Thursday so if anyone wants me to drop there's in for them, let me know. (If they taste better than mine, I'll replace them with Toohey's Extra Dry :P ).

The Royal Show Beer Tasting is tomorrow fortnight   :drink: (Sat Nov 10th). (If anyone wants a ticket but hasn't put a beer in, you could see if someone has a spare in this thread. It's a fun afternoon/evening!)

Hope everyone's beers are going well. All of my beers at home, including the comp ones, have a slight haze. Is anyone else getting this at the moment? I know it would cleans up with isinglass but I couldn't be bothered.

Like lambs to the slaughter  :),

Stevem01 dropped his beers here last night so I left them out in the sun all day today so that should solve any competition from him ;). But NME and sinkas dropped their beers in only tonight. How can I ruin their beers with so little time left? :dunno:

Lukas, the tasting ticket is what it is all about . My beers here are all hazy and I even gave NME and sinkas a taste of my worst beer. (In advance I wrote down, "This is my worst beer!") My prediction is that beer will score low but maybe beer comps are like Cheesetradamus - anyone can win .

Btw, has anyone got a spare ticket to the tasting?

Good on you Lukas :peace:. Two more things...

1. I'm chasing two more tickets if anyone has some spares.

2. Who's meeting up here so I can book cab/maxi-cab. So far I think it is Doug and his mate, Case and Simon. Anyone else?

;)

Hope it's not too long a trip for you NME. Maybe take a roadie? :P

Even though it's hot, we tend to kick on after the show tasting so make sure you wear "after 6pm" clothes so you don't get kicked out of pubs for inappropriate attire .

See you soon guys .

Bugger! Really wanted to go to that. Had to go into town for dinner tonight and got stuck in road blocks on the way in and out. Cops everywhere seeing as Hilary Clinton and Leon Panetta (US Defence Secretary) are visiting us. I tried to invite Hilary over for a beer but she drove past too fast .

Has anyone checked their mail for the Royal Perth Beer Show, "Judge's Fedback Sheet"? Found mine today but they could have been sitting in the box for a week or more.

If so, did you learn anything?

Yeah mine rocked up a couple of days ago (with certificate attached :D).

There was a single sheet per beer with not a lot of words on it. Surely that's not all they used right? For my blonde ale they picked up a hint of sulfur (which I'm not overly sensitive to apparently) and they didn't get much hop aroma. I just had a glass from the keg, and I think something went awry with the bottling. Remember the one I brought over seemed a little under carbed? Anyway, all ticks for the brown ale as you would imagine ;)

I get all mixed up on this but I know I thought your brown ale was good (the gold medal winner) but I think I thought your blonde was better - very clean etc. Is that my faulty memory?

Glad to hear you received the same info as I did. In previous years, I have only entered one or two beers as that is all I had, 'on spec'. This year I had seven beers on tap so for some reason, I entered all of them :).

I'm a bit confused on the sheets we received back. You might remember better than me, but didn't we get more sheets back per beer in previous years - one per judge? There is no score on the sheet but I can't remember if there ever was in the past.

The only reason I mention all this is because I put one really crap beer in. Remember that awful English IPA? None of us could nail what the problem was so I was hoping the judges would nail it. Unfortunately, on my judge's sheet for that beer there are only 10 words, "On the hazy side, US hops? Centennial autolysis? Fermentation issues." Not sure what that means.

The lowest 'word' count I scored on a judges sheet was 6, "V/Good (under appearance). Strong diacetyl spoilt this beer." Only the appearance section of the judges feedback had been ticked on this sheet. On the silvers and bronze there was a lot more info (31, 38, 32 words on the silvers and 9 words on the bronze) with all 9 boxes ticked. The silvers and bronzes also were the only beers that scored any comments at all in the lower half of the judge's sheet.

....

Judges have an almost impossible job I reckon. I actually have no idea how they do it - my palate is shot after two or three different beers . In their, 'brief,' they are meant to give feedback on how a beer can be improved. I think this, in reality, is an unrealistic expectation. Who would want to waste their time writing about a crap beer when they can write what they liked about a better beer when their time and palates are very limited in the comp environment. (Ask Nev!)

What I am trying to say, very poorly, is that I wish there were more sensory training sessions. I was so disappointed to miss the one you posted about a few weeks ago Simon. I would have loved to take that English IPA to that and ask, "What on earth is that thing we are all tasting?"

Did anyone go to the session NME mentioned above? Did you learn anything? I wonder if we could try and schedule another one?
