The Australia wide search is on to find an amateur brewer game enough to clone brew an old school Sail & Anchor brew, the Iron Brew English Strong Ale. The recipe vaults open, a gold medal brew log ready and waiting!

Iron Brew Strong Ale is brewed from a high charge of Pale Malt to create the bulk of the fermentable sugars with a generous proportion of Dark Crystal Malt for the very luscious caramel and toffee palate and a touch of roasted barley. The gently balancing bitterness and lingering finish is provided by Noble hop pellets and flowers with a late kettle addition for aroma. The style is marked by a very full colour, deep copper, with a hint of ruby, which comes from the dark and caramelized roasted malts. The aroma should be an intricate array of rich currant-like fruitiness, blackstrap molasses and higher alcohols, more reminiscent of liqueur. ORIGINAL BREW SPECS: OG 1066, Bitterness 43 IBU, Colour 60 EBC, Alc/Vol 7%

Thanks for letting us know OB :salute:.

For some reason, your link isn't working but this one should. You have posted all the relevant info anyway.

I think we should all go in this comp as no one has posted to the link yet :).

It's a shame they haven't given more information on the beer style and my memories of this beer are very vague. This thread certainly brings back memories for me as I worked at the Sail and Anchor (Australia's first pub brewery) back in 1987 during the America's Cup. They were fun days :). The day that we Aussies lost the cup, the pub was full and the only time the beer taps were turned off was to change kegs :o. It was quite incredible.

All I remember was that this is a beer I didn't like much - it's a bit too full on for me. I also think it might have been one of the beers where we actually tapped the keg on the bar. In other words, you hammered a venting plug into a wooden plug at the top of the keg to allow air in. A brass tap was then similarly hammered into another bung to let the beer out. I think we only let the beer be consumed over two days.

Later on, they did end up actually bottling some of these beers that had only previously ever been hand-tapped. Ironbrew must have been one of them though the names changed every five minutes! I suspect that Ironbrew may have originally been called, "Dogbolter." The Dogbolter name was eventually given to their Schwartzbier which was originally just called, "Matilda Bay Dark Lager."

You can probably see now why I am having difficulty remembering what this beer actually was :),

It's been posted as well on another forum where most of the brewers still use that quaint old Victorian system of mash tuns, kettles, underbacks half backs and hop backs etc  so it would be fantastic if a BIAB brewer could walk off with this one. I'll be in it. I understand that the ABV is going to be around 7% so I'm sure that my bag (from Perth) can handle it no problems.
