   Hi Guys,
   Just been scouring the we for alternatives to the Bunnings $23 willow jerry cans.....
   
   I can get these ones (20L) for around $8.
   
   What do you think???? They are HDPE and food grade just like the bunnings ones.... but is it too good to be true??

2. No -chill and trub management

   I NC'd my last batch and am a definite convert :D
   
   This may be a dumb question but...
   If I No-Chill, do I need to worry about excluding the kettle trub?
   
   I figure that I should be able to just empty the whole kettle into the cube, and allow all the break material to settle out in its own time, then transfer clearer wort to the fermenter down the track. This would reduce a bit of wastage and also speed the brew day up a bit. +1 for laziness :D
   
   Is there any good reason not to do this?

   Cheese cloth is a great idea! Thanks for bringing it to my attention. I knew before I even tried my 'experiment' that I was reinventing the wheel, but it's always fun to hope against hope that you can stumble upon something that no one - in the thousands of years that humans have been brewing suds - has ever thought of.

   hey guys,
   I'm looking to brew this recipe:
   
   the idea is to get a huge hop flavor and aroma without too much bitterness.
   A friend said he's brewed this before with no chilling and he will not try no-chill again as the beer was way to bitter and unbalanced.
   
   how would you shift the hop additions if no-chilling?

   Really simple as everything I do. I just use it to enhance A beer. If I have a Cream ale and I want a little more oomph I use a shot of hop vodka. I am not talking about a buzz from alcohol I am talking about a aroma buzz . To be honest some beers I try to emulate just don't do it for me. I just finished a lager last night. It was a wheat and toasted rye bock. I didn't really care for it that much. A little shot of hop vodka brought it to life. I blew out the keg thanks to a little help...

   Before I was doing all grain brewing with a 3V system, and while the wort was boiling in the lowest kettle, I could get some boiling water out of the topmost kettle to sanitize my counter-flow chiller (25' of 3/8 copper tubing inside a garden hose).
   
   Now that I am going to BIAB, I won't have that top kettle anymore - so what is the best way to sanitize the chiller prior to using it? I don't have a food grade pump (though I might be able to get my hands on a garden fountain pump).
   
   Any ideas?...

   Never tried no-chill (yet), but I've been following the posts here with keen interest. I'm curious, however, about the Winpak that is referred to regularly ( ) on the USPlastics site. I wrote the USPlastics company and asked about it's heat resistance and received this reply:

   The maximum temperature that those are recommended for is 190°F.

   HDPE has little branching, giving it stronger intermolecular forces and tensile strength than lower-density polyethylene. The difference in strength exceeds the difference in density, giving HDPE a higher specific strength. It is also harder and more opaque and can withstand somewhat higher temperatures (120 °C/ 248 °F for short periods, 110 °C /230 °F continuously). High-density polyethylene, unlike polypropylene, cannot withstand normally-required autoclaving conditions.

6. Using a Fermenter Bucket to No-Chill.

   Any thoughts on no-chilling in a fermentation bucket?
   
   My thought is as follows (admittedly stolen from a post I read on another board)
   
   1. Whirlpool at end @ flame out, then siphon into bucket
   2. Seal bucket - put an empty airlock on the bucket with a alcohol soaked cotton ball - with hopes that it will filter out/kill any nasties that might get sucked in when as the wort cools.
   3. Pitch in 24 hrs (or so) once the wort is cooled down.

   I'm not a scientist either - that's why I'm not willing to risk it.. might not cause any problems today, but maybe in 20 years?
   
   I wonder if the same is true for the biab bag and the no-chill cube???

   so i got a call from my friend Fernando saying I've got this radical idea. come over and bring a camera .
   so i did.
   Fernando's fridge died, and being the engineer that he is, he took it apart. and out came the refrigerator radiator.
   now here's the radical idea: chilling wort using air!
   we started out with 10L of 100C water. the water was then pumped from the kettle and through the refrigerator radiator and back into the kettle. all the while a fan was blowing air onto the radiator. the ambient...

   I've thought about trying No Chill in a cube but one hurdle is there that I haven't explored yet.
   
   What do you guys use to transfer your near boiling wort?
   
   I have a big aluminum kettle and I don't want to drill it for a spigot. I know my plastic autosiphon would not stand up to near boiling water, nor would my tubing. Silicone would solve the tubing problem. Stainless steel would solve the siphon problem, although a little tricky I bet.

   Looks pretty easy. Of course you'd have to scale it appropriately for different diameter hoses and maybe substitute the glass marble for a stainless ball. Maybe not though.

   PS - And just a thought, but the wire might not be required. I think crimping the copper fitting, or cutting then folding a small tab on either side would be sufficient to hold the marble/ball in place.

   question: as i have just started kegging, i'd like to try and end up with 19L after fermentation. my first kegged batch left me with 19L and another 3L in bottles. that's 22L+ ~1 fermenter loss as i cubed 23L.
   would cubing less than a full cube have ill affects on my no-chilling? My cube is a 28KG malt extract jerrycan that holds around 23 liters. I'm worried that leaving too much head space will promote bacterial contamination.

    Hey all,
    I use 23L cubes that originally had LME in them. i therefore assume they are food grade.
    I sometimes find that they still smell of LME or wort. or even worse - iodaphore.
    
    any thoughts or recommendations on cleaning cubes?

    The best way getting rid of odors etc. is water.
    Well, it's working great for me. I'm cleaning bottles stinks with cigarette, fermentors being left overnight..
    Just let fresh water flow non-stop for few minutes.
    Works fine for me.

    No worries joshua. It is really annoying when your tap water is around that temperature and it happens where I live for half the year. Often I can only chill to around 28C. If I no-chill in the kettle (which I occasionally do, the temp is often still around 35 C the next morning. I have never found these two things to cause any haze though with my water etc.
    
    When I can't easily chill to pitching temperature, I'll get as low as I easily can and then drain the kettle and then put the whole...
