   This past weekend I decided to try a new wort chiller. I have had it for sometime now but had not trusted it :pray: . I had been using the copper tubing with a garden hose connected to it but that wasted so much water.
   
   This chiller you fill once and leave it. The new chiller does require about 25 thousand gallons of water to start with (my cement pond). :smoke: :drink: :cool:
   
   The red enamel pot is my second running I do off my primary batch - 21 litter and a 4 liter batch off the same grain....

   I'm doing small batches 11 to 15 litre, I would like to 'no chill' and ferment in the cube. In the UK I have not found a supplier of 15liter cubes but I can get 20 litre cubes.
   
   20liters would either leave a lot of head space or I would have to squash the cube a lot to get the volume down..
   
   I have a Co2 bottle would it be OK to fill a 20litre cube to say 10 litres with hot wort flush the headspace with Co2 seal the cube and proceed as usual, sterilising the cube etc.

   Just out of curiosity Bob/Lylo. When you add hops to the cube, do you do so loose or in a sack?
   Also, what do you do when it comes to fermentation? filter or just pull the bag out?
   
   I have thought about no chill hopping, but I would feel the need to squeeze the bejeesus out of those hops to get my wort back.

   I know the videos, i wached the on youtibe before. I have to wait until i go to a store to see woth my own eyes what it says on the cubes. The online store just don't have enough info...

   I bought a cube, is a 20 liter canister, with the HPDE symbol on the bottom (no number though...i guess is optional).
   1 - The walls doesn't feel to thick, could that be a problem?
   2 - Also, the cap doesn't say what plastic is made of... should i be concerned, or is self explanatory that is the same...

   What's the best way to transfer the boil to the cube? Is it safe to use the tap in my Pot? Should I use a hose in it? Or let the boil drop directly to the cube?

   I use a 1m length of silicone hose attached to the ball valve on my keggle to transfer to the cube. The valve itself is capable of being fully disassembled and is cleaned thoroughly after every brew day

   Due to some kegs I bought with faulty welds, over the next few months, I have to completely empty my keg fridge (half a keg left), buy 8 new kegs (that I trust and fit in my fridge :roll:), re-tube the fridge and then fill the kegs.
   
   Seeing as I have two kettles that can handle a double-batch, recuperating from this keg disaster might allow for some interesting research opportunities for us.

   I brewed a beer and stored the wort four months. I re-brewed the exact beer and fermented them side by side. I tasted the wort at bottling and they seemed identical? Any thoughts?

   I know the feeling. I will be brewing a double batch of it when I get back from the NHC. I ran out a while back but didn't want to waste it by brewing it until I get my sense of smell back! I am starting to smell flowers and hops when I open a bag. All beer still tastes like (Bud Lite) to me. The NHC this week will be a bust unless I find some sour beers that I can really taste! Oh Well?

   I have two large kettles (70L versus your 50L) and I chill and no-chill. Both methods have advantages and disadvantages. If you have an immersion chiller and are single batching, I would advise using it especially when starting out.
   
   The immersion chiller you have built is a great investment. I would advise you to ignore no-chilling for now unless you get in a situation where you don't have a fermentor available to pitch immediately.

   i put the brew 20+L
   in to the cube , it was very hot and the cube was a bit wobbly,
   
   did i put it in too hot, or is this normal,
   
   the cubes are food grade and quite thick

   You say that they are food-grade, but are they HDPE (high density poly ethylene)?
   
   As I understand it, HDPE is rated for hotter-than-boiling temperatures, but not all food-grade containers are made of HDPE, so that is something important to check.
   
   As to your question, I have noticed my cubes swelling a bit from the heat of hot wort, but your cubes look a little dimple-y (for lack of a better term) and look like the plastic is melting a little.

    I scored this plus a second plate chiller at work today. This one is about 14 plates and the 2nd one about 25, but its got a sligtly damaged inlet port. They were about to go to the scrappy before i saved them. They're quite large compared to standard brewing type units (see the comparrison to the keyboard) and have what looks like 1 1/4 or 1 1/2 inch (1.5 in = 3.81 cm) inputs.     Brewed today and No chilled for the first time. Apart from the saving in time I found it so much easier due to not having to be ultra careful about sanitation like you do with chilled wort. Boil end, 20 minute settle and syphoned whilst still piping hot.. :shoot:

    Saying that if you are happy to chill and pitch the same day I can't see any advantage. I liked it cos it removed that fumbling/hurried period of time when all you want to do is get finished (and pissed). It splits your brew day into more manageable...

    You could try your LHB shop and if you no luck there, try some camping stores. They are in Bcf and stratco and bunnings up here in brissy. You could also purchase a FWK off craftbrewer or another store that sells them and keep using it for your cube.

    Just another NOOB to BIAB. Lot's of Kits though behind me. I don't know if anyone has used these for a No-Chill Cube but they are HDPE but with a large mouth (ease of cleaning concern). I am currently awaiting a follow up email from the company to see if it can handle the temps (100C/220F) of boiling Wort being poored directly into them for overnight cooling. I would think it could handle it due to the fact HDPE is HDPE, I might add that it is thick walled also, very sturdy. It's from a company...

    Earlier in this thread I said....
    I bought extra screw caps to fit them with a air lock. The idea was to use the No Chill containers as a extra fermenter. I still haven't done that! I rarely have more than 3 buckets fermenting at a time. I thought the the cleaning would be difficult but not hard to do infrequent as it would be done.
    
    I brewed and No Chilled a Black IPA on this past St. Paddy's day. The next day (or so) I added the yeast to the N/C cube (now fitted with a air lock)....

    Following on from my comments Here , I thought I should pull my finger out and do something about it!!
    
    The wort is from a coopers Pale Ale that I did back in January. This is the 1st cube of a double batch that I did on the day in question. The 2nd one has already been fermented and bottled. I'll be keeping a couple of bottles of this to compare it one day down the track when I ferment the 1st cube. Although, I don't know how true the comparison will be due to the aging in the bottle etc. But...

    You are right, none of the posters on AHB actually did it on purpose and none of them have shown any tasting notes or side by side tastings, that have been reported.
    
    I am going to do this experiment and keep a couple of bottles from the first batch so hopefully it can be as true side by side testing as can be allowed, under the circumstances.

    After having the same question asked in 2 different threads, I would like to pose the following question for discussion;
    
    Does storing fresh wort (slow/no-chill) in a sealed cube improve the finished beer?
    
    My initial thoughts are that it is entirely possible.
    
    We know that the sugar (maltose) will remain constant. Therefore the Gravity will/should remain constant.
    The volume will remain constant, assuming a proper seal.

    Done our fist beer in a while the other night, all went well, brewed and then straight into no chill cubes. As we do a batch each, we both stuck our cubes in the fermenting fridge out of the way. The next day we smacked our yeast in preperation to pitch, then went to the fridge to get our cubes out and realised we made a massive mistake, we closed the fridge door overnight with the boiled brews in there and they were still hot the next night! I took them out and stuck them into pool to get them...

    I have only done one beer this way, a hefeweizen, and it tastes good, different from the only one I have done before, extract with dry yeast, this one was biab and white labs hefe yeast. My next beer is going to be a kolsch, has anyone done a pils or so in a biab no chill style? And what do you think about leaaving it in the kettle, just till the next day though.

    What about two ten litre containers sanitised with starsan that way you reduce back injury and easer to store in fridge to cool to exact pitching temp.

    most recipes call for a very short boil or non at all.
    can i boil for 15 minutes and than no-chill in my cube? will this not cause DMS or other problems?

    I pressure ferment in a s/s 5 gallon corny. If you don't like the idea of pressure, you can do a regular ferment with a blow off tube. I have some photos of what I've been doing with BIAB and pressure fermenting since May 2011, below...

    Just had a look at this video . At about 2 mins 20 secs, you'll see an electric stirrer being used to stir the mash. At 5 mins 20 secs, it is being used to stir the wort during the chill.
    
    While I think continual electric stirring of the mash is a bit over the top, I've always wanted something to stir the wort while immersion chilling as it does speed things up a lot.
    
    The only idea I've had is to add some sort of impeller driven by the water running through the chiller but I have never worked...

    Yeasty: LOL about shopping in diusguise. I'm amazed you've heard of the sprinkler ban. (Where do kids play these days? :)). I can't see how the sprinkler would work unless I wanted to chill and dilute simultaneously :lol:. In other words, where's the output water going to go? (Like the way you're thinking though Yeasty).

    I've been using NC cubes for my last 5 brews and something has always bothered me. At what stage do you start the transfer of the hot wort to the cube? I've always done it as soon as possible after flameout (within 5-10 minutes) which means that I'm getting a lot of break material into the cube. I'm scared that if I leave the wort for too long (wirlpool or waiting for break material to settle) then it will not be hot enough to sanitise the cube.

    Most Mitre10 stores have stacks of them too, in a couple different shapes so you can choose one to fit your situation.
