  As always on liquids your mileage may vary some. Also, grind will change the absorption rate. Always try to grind the same setting for consistancy. Boil rate will change if you use a propane burner also.
  As far as To squeeze or not to squeeze , that is the question I personally have never had off flavors {tannins} due to squeezing the bag. I do also let it drain over a collender not the pot. Only change in flavor profile has been due to I brew outside and will pick up wild yeast due to spring...

  I have made 3 batches of beer now and I'm having a great time.
  
  I have noticed that a lot of experienced brewers use a glass or PET carboy as a primary fermentation vessel.
  
  What are the pros and cons of using a carboy vs a plastic pale with a lid for primary fermentation?
  
  How big a carboy is needed for 5.5 gallon batches?

  Great advice from the above comments. I frement in plastic as Bob does. Ive never broken a 6 gal carboy, but I dread the thought of that! The only thing I would say about plastic is that if you think that its time to replace it, do it!

  Good Day Scott, The number and HDPE should be on the bottom of the bucket toward the center.
  
  Clear PET bottles(Better Bottles) can and do, go soft at 180F. HDPE2 is good for 220F water.

  I try to keep my brewing as natural as possible. Though my first BIAB will be in a week or two, I have maybe 90 some batches under my belt (maybe only 25 AG). As I consider doing lagers it seems that fermenting in kegs will take up less space in my keezer. So I am considering using Fermcap-S in the future for heavy lagers. Also, with heavy Ales it seems that I loose a lot of beer through the blow-off tubes. Does this stuff detract from the quality or nostalgia of beer? Does it kill the head...

  Funnily enough, I've started fermenting in 60L fermenters, and I only have about 5L of headspace now so blow-off is a big problem :)

  I use to buy in bulk but found a lot was getting wasted especially hops coz I dont brew the same beers often except for my house wheat beer.
  Since relocating my local hbs has a program on his website. Recipes included. Where you just put in your equipment stats. And the program does the rest.   Hi all,
  
  I have a Krispy Kolsch in secondary fermentation. There is a mild sulfur smell coming out of the airlock along with a beer and hops aroma. I also noticed the sulfur smell when I made the yeast starter with light extract.
  
  Is the sulfur smell typical with the Wyeast Kolsch yeast?

  I figured for my first AG BIAB batch, I'd use the Simple BIAB Calculator to calculate my starting water amount, and squeeze the bag after mashing. But the only note on the calculator in regards to squeezing says, Mash volume assumes no squeezing of the bag. For hard squeeze, subtract 1 or more.
  
  I'm not entering my keggle's diameter, so does anyone know the basic starting water adjustment (to the starting gallons) I'd have to make if I'm squeezing the bag?

  So I have a few ~35L pots or 9.3 gallons. I was told I should probably do Maxi-BIAB. I have read some of the things here and the information is not quite efficently consolidated yet. For me in my setup the best thing I should probably do is make up or get a 5 gallon recipe. Use that recipe without changing the ammounts because I want 5 gallons in bottles.   In your case, you're using a kettle that is easily large enough for a full-volume boil, just not quite large enough for a full-volume mash. There's an even simpler method that I use (I brew ~3.5 gal post-boil batch sizes in a 5 gal kettle on my stove top). Since your kettle is large enough for a full-volume boil, you could sparge with enough water to get you to your proper pre-boil volume. There shouldn't be a need to continue to add water throughout the boil. In my case, I don't sparge at all....

  Someone local to me on Craigslist has these for $19 apiece. Would this be something good to store grains in?
  
  Secondly, since I'm just starting out... is there a good works-for-nearly-everything grain that I can buy in bulk, assuming I can narrow my beer choices down to Pale Ales / IPAs to start? Something like a Pale Ale 2-row? I can always hit up my LHBS for the smaller-quantity specialty grains.

  One thing I should have mentioned before is that for plastic containers (fermentors, cubes, storage bins etc) it makes a massive difference price-wise, in Australia at least, if you go directly to packaging suppliers.
  
  For example, I bought 8 cubes the other day from Vital Packaging at $8.80 while identical cubes sold in the hardwares for $29.95 :o.

  The flap wheels on the angle grinder are really good for smothing sharp stainless. YOu can get different grades. They're also good for polishing the keg itself. Really quick and comes over smooth and shiny

  Just got my 19l pot and found a stainless stand at work will which support my paella ring until I upgrade to a more powerful burner (and larger pot!)
  
  On a 17l water only test run it took 60 minutes to reach boiling point and easily held a rolling boil.
  
  As I live in a wet part of the UK with no water shortages, I will build a hosepipe fed copper coil chiller but will use my dog bath in the meantime.

  This is a voile curtain I found at Target. I made a brew bag out of it and it as been working well. Although it is already sewn and embroidered to be a curtain the voile is less than what you would spend on a raw sheet of voile at many places. :headhit:

  I did my first all grain (a Krispy Kolsch)2 days ago and I used the full volume BIAB method. I made a yeast starter and used a stir plate and OMG the fermentation really took off! the air lock got blown right out of its hole and foam was pouring out. I rigged up a blowoff tube and submerged the output in a big jug of water and things are bubbling, growling and chugging along.

  The krausen really depends on the yeast strain, beer and how vigourous your ferment. I've seen WY3068 nearly double the size of the brew with krausen.
  
  I sometimes do 20L in 25L buckets, and yes, I do need a blowoff sometimes.
  
  And I've recently begun doing 60L in 60L fermenters (about 5L of headspace).... no where near enough room for a vigourous ferment.... but the blow-off helps, and, I want to try the fermcap

  What are your collective thoughts on mashing in by:
  1. placing the BIAB bag in the kettle at strike temp and slowly adding grain whilst stirring to avoid doughballs; versus
  2. filling the bag with the milled grain and THEN placing in the kettle at strike temp.
  
  I have only ever BIAB'd using the first option but am curious whether the second option has any downfalls ie doughballs etc

  I have now brewed 2 batches of beer using the BIAB. The first beer was an English IPA with a OG of 1.059 and the End of Boil efficiency was calculated at 86%. My method was experimental, but I used a crude batch sparge. The beer was awesome and true to style.
  
  My next batch, I improved the method by doing a step infusion method as follows:
  
  Step 1 - dough in with 3.5 gals of water at 125 deg for 15 minutes ( I am using an 8.4 gal pot with false bottom at the 1 gal level)

  im all set to go with biab but my only problem is thinking of a way to stop the bag touching the element and hop strainer. i have a 60 litre boiler and last night i tested it to see if i can hold the mash temperature, in 90 minutes i lost almost 3 degrees which i think is good. My idea was to put three cups in the bottom and a metal pizza tray on top but i never realised how hot water is at 66 degrees so im going to find it hard to take them out again once iv made my wort.

  The other cheap useful 'gadget' I found was a paint stirrer from wickes. As it totally eradicates doughballs by lifting and dropping when doughing in.

  So I'm moving up to All-Grain, and BIAB has grabbed my attention for many reasons. My questions are:
  
  Can I just get an all-grain kit from somewhere and brew it following BIAB method? Or would I need to get more grains?
  
  Also, I've noticed that all-grain kits are usually cheaper than extract kits. If I was to follow some recipes on the forums, or make one my own, does the cost of ingredients come out to about the same as a pre-made kit?

  Newbie here, hoping to give the whole BIAB thing a whirl and introduce the lady to brewing at the same time. I am thinking about doing a 2 gallon batch of something easy with a light grain bill, maybe something summer-y like a blonde ale or a hefe?

  The problem with fly sparging through the bag is that the water takes the path of least resistance and can cause channeling and can therefore be a waste of time - fly sparging depends on a grain bed forming and the water forced to traverse the entire grain bed as equally as possible. I'd go for a dunk sparge every time. In fact this is what I'll be doing today as I'm brewing a Foreign Extra Stout for a competition and I will really need to do a sparge as it's a big grain bill.

  I'm going to brew this for my second BIAB. I saw some where about souring 2 cans of Guinness and adding to the recipe. But can't seem to find out when to add it. :dunno:

  I found the answer. 24 oz. in a bowl for 3or4 days to sour then boil for 10 min. pitch at flame out. :clap:

  Hi all!
  I'm planning a new recipy and I'm trying to figure out the amount of grain and water to use. I brew in a 25L pot and I'm not sure if I can do a regular BIAB or if I need to do a MaxiBIAB. So I plot in the details in the regular Calculator and it tells me to use 5736 grams of grain and 23,89L of water. I then plot in the same details in the Maxi-BIAB calculator and it tells me to use 5199 grams of grain and 22,83L of water. Why the significant difference between the two calculators?

  I plan to try my first BIAB this week. I worked up a simple 2 gallon recipe to test several things. I plan to do 2 batches to taste the difference in the grains. I've not brewed any all grain brews so I figured if I kill it 2 gals is better than 5. I threw the special roast in just because I have it and don't want it to get stale. I want simple for my first batch. I plan to use S-04 because I have a pack. This will be a lot of firsts for me but I'm really looking forward to it. I'm...

  Sounds like a plan I'll try it. I know the head doesn't affect the flavor but it does the appearance and the eye feeds first. I have a few Test Ales I wanna make with different base grains so I want a good base recipe to make them all equal. I just threw the special roast in so it wouldn't go stale.

  1/3oz Magic Hop Dust 60 min
