Hi, I know there is a recipe section, but I am looking for yummy recipes for women (aka SWMBO). Something sweet and yummy, something like I dont know desert? I know this might not be in the right section, but other then the question above, how many of you other guys have been sent on the same quest? hahahah :lol: I am biab all the way with decent skills and gear.

Not I no, I was replying to the thread with a suggestion. I'm lucky, I know exactly what beer my wife likes, that been most of them! :thumbs: I will however be tackling an attempt to clone Holdens Golden Glow for her soon, as this is one of her favourites. Handy as we live in the same region as the brewery, so shouldn't need to play with the water much....

As to a recipe for my wife, I'd probably go with a curry..... :yum:

PS. Us brits tend not to ask for anything to take to fight a cold,...

I have managed to knock out my first BIAB after building a 50 litre E-Keggle with 2x 2200w elements from Kmart kettles. I made the All Amarillo APA which I'm about to keg and initial tastes are very promising.

I just posted in the I`m thinking of buying a thread about kettle size. The pot I`m going to buy is 50l and wont fit in my sink for cooling
and one of the replies got me thinking.

I've been reading that some brewers just put a sanitized towel on their kettle and a lid and let it sit overnight to cool to pitching temperature

What about just using my fermenter as a no chill cube? it`s fairly well sealed, just chuck the hot wort in let it cool over night and pitch.

Hello did my first all grain today and got 81.2% efficiency on it very happy.
I used beersmith in the end because it was easy to work out did an ipa clone of punk ipa which I like a lot hope it turns out ok thanks for the help

Below is the BIABacus output for what I'm thinking of doing next. I'll try and outline the background and thought processes.

I currently have 3 brews at different stages:

* A WilliamsWarn English Pale Ale extract kit that's fully matured (23L batch)
* An experimental 4L batch which was a full boil DME + Galaxy hops, in bottles but still green.

So I bottled this last night. So far the result has been excellent! Apart from the colour I've almost recreated the local brew here. When I bottled it, all I could think of was being at the football!

Anyway, the FG ended up 2 points below the initial estimate (FG 1.009). Which, given all the strangeness of the OG, is either odd or reassuring.

It only made 6 x 500mL bottles, so the overall efficiency was very poor. But a learning experience.

I’ve been using BIABacus for a while, but I’ve hit a stumbling block. This is the first recipe I’ve brewed using lactose (or any other sugars) which will get added to the boil at 15 mins.

Looking back on the forum I’ve found a very informative post from PP that said to adjust section ‘Y’ to 75% and 0% which I have done. I was hoping someone could take a quick look at my recipe to make sure it all looks okay?

Please note, i am no way a advanced or Pro brewer of any kind. But i would have thought for a stout, you would mash at a higher temp.
Personally i mashed my sweet stout at 69Deg...

I normally mash my beers a little higher than 66°c – But with the additions of flaked oats and lactose which all add body. I wanted to air on the side of caution, so mashing a little lower than I normally would.

Hopefully it pays off and I get a delicious beer :thumbs:

How to maintain the mash temperature?

Hi all! Very much a newbie here. I just completed my second all grain BIAB and had a difficult time keeping the mash temperature anywhere near the desired 153F/67C. Any pointers, or just do not worry?

- electric range
- 4 gallons in a 30L pot.
- wrapped with towels when it was off the heat
- It dropped 10 degrees over 30 minutes.

I put it back on the heat, it started to overshoot, I had to use the wort chiller to bring it down, undershot, added heat, repeat... The flippin' thing won't cool...

For my 15 gal pot, I used Reflectix - wrapped around about 3 times and then covered with 2 heavy wool blankets. Only lost 2 degrees over 60 mins. That was in summer...in winter I'll use more blankets and probably drag it inside.

So am planning to do my first BIAB`s After the golden week holidays we have here.
I went with NRB's All Amarillo APA for my first choice. But Subbed Amarillo with cascade.

The ECB I left blank. I didn`t know what to input. See this thread.
It has the malts available to me from my online shop.
E.G pale ale malt 5-7. and I am not sure they are the same grains. The recipe calls for munich 1.
But on my site it just lists munich. So kind of going blind, with the knowledge that no matter what...

I have some quick answers and comments for you.

EBC Number - Remember that if you see malt color expressed in Lovibond / SRM instead, the number is half. So a malt with EBC number of 4 has an SRM number of 2. (Lovibond and SRM are about the same thing, and they are half of the EBC number). If you can, look up the malter's website and get the number there. Or get another malter's numbers...which should be similar for their similar malt (like Pilsner, Vienna, Munich, etc.). And...

Hi on my 5th all grain brew and appreciate the tools and help here.
I have a couple of questions:

1. The actual pre-pitching volumes doesnt seem to have automated connections to the rest of the spreadsheet - intuitively I would have expected actuals to override expected for the remainder of the brewing process - for example that amount is now used as the amount in the fermenter and adjustments made from that point.

I can get the Dry Hop treatment but shouldn't the actual loss amount from kettle to fermenter impact the Volume at Pitching ? How is that number calculated (or how do i get that number to appear)? I'm basically looking for stepwise refinements on my way to the bottling process in terms of increasing specificity as to the number of bottles and actual efficiency numbers.

First thing I did was go to Amazon JP. and they had it. Purchased and waiting now. Got my mash bag in the post yesterday too.

I started BIAB last summer and have done a couple of batches that were ok. But there's one thing about BIABacus that baffles me, the What you will use
column for malt it calculates. I have attached a BIABacus recipe from Brewer's Friend that I filled in a best I could. I know that the boil time should be 90 minutes and can manipulate numbers like Auto Kettle Efficiency (to 67%) to make the weights the same but am not sure if this is right. Can anyone explain what the discrepancy in malt...

Bit short on time but this might help....

Don't try and match the weights to the recipe you are copying. Nearly all recipes you find on the net (even in magazines and books) are very poorly written. (If you read A Perfect Example of a Low Integrity Recipe you'll see that Clear Brewing Terminology is incredibly rare.) Many make no sense.

The author of the recipe you are copying will have no understanding of the different types of efficiency (not their fault, it's the fault...

Hi all,
I am trying to plan my first brew, and trying to get my head round the biabacus.
Anyway I have to get all my ingredients online. No LHBS :dunno:
So I use this site, I am still trying to work out which of the grains are base malts and which are specialty grains.
Is going purely by name ok? E.G Pale malt is always a base malt and caramel is always a specialty malt?

Hi All,

So I have done my first BIAB brew, thoroughly enjoyed it, Fullers London Porter from Graham Wheelers book. I am going to make this into a plum porter using plum extract so I will let you know how that turns out.

I was just wondering what the reason is for a 90 minute mash, I know a few AG brewers and they mash, in a separate mash tun, for 60 mins? Is it because we are mashing and sparging at the same sort of time?

The same question about the boil, do any of you boil for just 60 mins?...

Im about to brew my second BIAB next weekend which will be Jamil's and John's Ruabeoir Irish Red Ale and it will be a 2.5 gallon VIF. I adjusted the VAW as recommended for BCS recipes as instructed on this site however I'm questioning the IBUs. I bumped them up a bit to get slightly more bitterness but still within style. Can anyone please take a look at my BIABacus file and give some feed back prior to my brew day?

WS - Increasing the IBUs in Secton D along with the new value of AA% will work out fine. Most people are +/- 4 Tinseth IBU anyway.

So I am getting ready to do my first brew later this afternoon!  Pretty excited.  :)  I'm doing the Amarillo ipa that biabacus comes prepopulated with for my first attempt.  I just wanted to post the file to make sure everything is filled out right.

The one question I have, it looks like my VAW is slightly larger (24.5l) then the original recipe ( 23l ), but the grain bill is smaller.  I would have thought it would be slightly larger?  Just want to be sure this isn't something I have filled...

Agreed on the dry cold vs humid cold. We were in Grande Prairie, there was no such thing as humidity there. Also once you get to -35 or so it didn't seem any different than -50, other than maybe the eyelids trying to freeze shut a little faster haha, just had to blink fast :)

As far as your schedule goes, Fg stabilizing is definitely important, but don't be afraid to give it a few extra days to let the yeasties clean up. I don't really bother to check much anymore, but I always give everything...

I have taken Jamil Zainasheff and John Palmer's recipe from Brewing Classic Styles and adapted it with BIAB to my kettle for my 2nd brew.  The recipe is outside the BJCP style guidelines both for OG and color, so I reduced the target OG, but have not made an adjustment for color.
Please take a look at it and advise of any areas you think may be an issue.  Thanks.

Have time for a quick reply... I would go with Jamil's recipe without any real changes for this batch. After brewed, if desired it is easy to adjust and make changes to later brews. Get a benchmark ...then you will know what to expect with his recipe. It will be good, and can always be adjusted later.

Meas efficiency when scaling a recipe on BeerSmith2

Please see attached photos. I believe everything has scaled correctly as it should with my equipment compared to the original recipe, However the meas efficiency bottom right has gone from 70.7% to 101.7%. Why is this? My efficiency is only set for 70% in the equipment setup so don't understand why this has changed so much?

One of the big problems when you start brewing is software and terminology. It's such a confusing area we ended up building the BIABacus and creating Clear Brewing Terminology .

Prior to the above, we put a lot of work into BeerSmith2 as you can see in this Beersmith2 guide . BS2, like all other brewing software, is what I call 'static' - the user has to guess at very important variables whereas the BIABacus does this for you. It may look scary when...

I've brewed the All Amarillo APA twice now, and both batches have come out with way more apricot than I like. I've confirmed this by asking my professional tasters, and they agree that apricot is the dominant flavor. I know they are pros because they require payment in beer.

Is this taste profile a function of the hops, the grain bill, or perhaps the yeast?

If I were to stick with the grain bill and change the hops to eliminate or modify the apricot flavor, how would I go about changing the...

Streamer - a soak in Starsan won't do it. That is strictly a sanitizer. It's what you use directly after you use the cleaner. We are on the right track, I think. It appears to be a cleanliness issue, in that you have been rinsing and sanitizing, but not cleaning. 

I would rinse after use so that there is no build up and less sit time on the cleaner is necessary.

I'm going to try my first AG this weekend in my shiny new Burco boiler :thumbs: . To keep things simple I'm going with the NRB's Amarillo pale ale recipe and keeping the volume a bit away from my boilers maximums.
