  As always on liquids your mileage may vary some. Also, grind will change the absorption rate. Always try to grind the same setting for consistancy. Boil rate will change if you use a propane burner also.
  As far as To squeeze or not to squeeze , that is the question I personally have never had off flavors {tannins} due to squeezing the bag. I do also let it drain over a collender not the pot. Only change in flavor profile has been due to I brew outside and will pick up wild yeast due to spring...

  I'm on my third mini-BIAB - I'm following a recipe from Brewing Classic Styles, the American Amber Ale recipe.
  I've scaled the recipe for my brew pot and I've just finished the boil and I've wrapped it up and I'm leaving it to cool overnight and then I'll transfer to the fermenter and pitch the yeast tomorrow.
  
  The problem I have is that the pre-boil gravity was supposed to be 1.043 but my measurement came out as 1.057 !
  My end of boil ambient gravity reading came out as 1.075 and it's supposed...

  What's the difference between mash volume and volume into kettle ? What made me ask this question is that when I add 2 gallons of sparge water in that cell it reduces the amount of water needed in the Mash Volume cell but volume into kettle remains unchanged. Shouldn't adding sparge water reduce the amount of water in the volume into kettle?

  ...I always do a 90 Minute mash with a 10 minute mash out at 170° this time I saved back 2 gallons and poured over the bag then squeezed it pretty hard when done. There is no problem with this (unless you have done a stupidly fine crush, or have done a stupidly high temp mash-out or have a stupidly high pH :)). In fact, on larger batches, unless you had a stupidly coarse bag, you need to do it. See all the variations there?

  Well the biabacus is quite easy once you give it a try.
  I compared the results with the old calculator and the biabacus has 250g more grain than my original. I now need to try again and not add 3l too much water and see if i can get nearer to the OG. I think its correct :headhit: Will try for a 2nd brew today, will see how i go with work.
  22.5L VIF seems to be the magic number to use the most (All)of my grain.

  After getting the stock recipe NRB Amarillo Pale Ale under my belt, I now want to try one of the recipes in the Brewing Classic Styles book.
  
  In the book it states that the recipes assume that 5.5 Gallons/20.8L will transferred to the fermentor.
  
  When I'm adding this info into the BIABacus, do I need to change anything given that the recipes are based mainly around extract? I know each recipe gives the all-grain option as well but just wanted to check that I'm doing the right thing.

  Example for 75Min you have 28g total at AA% of AmarilloAA%+CentennialAA%+ChinookAA% /3 = avgAA%, etc ... enter it as hop mix 1 or something, then enter that information in your notes to remind you at a later date.
  
  For this, you could just do that for the flameout hops.

  I brewed this beer 3 weeks ago and everything went to plan apart from having to bump the temp a few times during mashing to keep at mashing temp. I stirred well when the heat was on. I built a starter with wyeast oktoberfest blend and stepped it up. Chilled it the morning of brewing and decanted off the wort. I pitched at 14 degrees and the starter slurry was at the same temp. I had the fermenter in a temp controlled fridge at 12 degrees. I had active fermentation in under 24hrs. The og was...

  Normally a swirl and bumping the temp a few degrees gets things going again for me. If that doesn't work you can try a fast ferment test. Basically take a sample, leave covered at ambient and give it a good swirl whenever you walk past. You should be able to figure out if it is still dropping and what it will get down to in about a week.
  
  On one occasion with a highly flocculant yeast I added about 50g of sugar diluted in boiling water to the fermenter and that got things going again.

  I have been gathering the equipment for my first biab brew and purchased the ingredients for a simple golden ale recipe that I found online. Having returned from the brew shop I am unable to find the recipe again and was hoping someone could help me.
  
  It was a 14 - 15ltr recipe and the ingredients are:
  
  3kg golden pale ale malt
  500g dark crystal malt
  100g hop pellets-goldings
  S04 dry yeast
  1g irish moss

  I certainly wouldn't be using dark crystal in a golden but.... To each their own.
  
  I would go 94% base malt to 6% on the crystal. 60 minute hop addition to 40 ibu with a small flameout addition.

  I was browsing in a book shop yesterday at the homebrew books and I found one that looked pretty good, it was hardback and was very nicely produced with nice looking pictures of beer (beer porn? ;) ) and for each style it had a recipe.
  The book was called Brewing Better Beer by Emma Christensen, not sure if anyone has a copy or seen it?
  
  Anyway, my question was that in all the recipes, for the hops, it had the hope type, the weight and the AA% of the hop.

  I'm looking at doing the recipe NRB's All Amarillo American Pale Ale mini-BIAB, the BIABacus all looks good but I did have one question.
  I've ordered a 15g pack of the Safale yeast and the BIABacus doesn't appear to scale the yeast quantity.
  What should I do with the yeast, my volume into fermentor is 5.5L so can I/should I save some yeast and only pitch half or what?
  Is there a more 'scientific' way of me pitching the right amount of yeast?

  A good rule of thumb used with good results is 0,75 grams per liter for batches up to 1.060 og and 1 gram per liter for og 1.060 and above this is supposed to be the pitching rates the pro use.

  Do a quick search on bitterness to gravity ratio, from memory beersmith has a good article on it.
  
  I tend to like my IPAs around 0.9/1 BU/OG ratio. I would recommend the same or less for you until you know what you like. If you search for IPA BU/OG ratio you will see some ranges which fit the style.
  
  Biabicus calculates this ratio for you also. If you haven't used the calculator yet I strongly recommend you grab it. I use it for all my recipes and it's amazing.

  I've just bought the book brewing classic styles and I'm going to try my first BIAB shortly with one of the simple English Pale Ale's.
  A couple of the grains in many of the English bitters I can't find on a couple of websites of local brewing stores - the two are:
  Special Roast (50 L)
  Aromatic (20 L)
  Does this go by a different name outside of the US or if it's not available, what do others suggest I use as a substitute?

  You could substitute them for similarly matched roasted level, but it may not end up being the same beer though.
  
  Special roast is a BRIESS product here
  
  Aromatic is a DINGEMANS product here .
  
  A quick look on craftbrewer shows you can get them there, just be careful about the colour ratings (EBC, Lovibond, SRM).

  I've been doing 'enhanced' extract kits for a while with good results and I'm looking at moving up to BIAB.
  My fermentation temperature brewing pale ales has been between 18 and 24 Celsius as I don't have any temp control but as i say, it's not been a problem and I've had good results.
  When I look on this forum at the BIAB recipes almost all of them that I've seen, regardless of the beer style states the fermentation temp as 18 or 19.
  So my question is, if I brew those same recipes at 18...

  I've completed my second BIAB (All grain) yesterday. Everything went well but I ended with an OG of 1.046 @70F instead of 1.065. :angry:
  
  I've included my BIABacus file but unfortunately I couldn't fill the volume informations as my new kettle has no water level indactor (I will solve this issue before my next brew).

  One other simple thing worth mentioning, how did you weigh the grain? Also, an easy way to measure volume, use a ruler to measure the headspace in your kettle, as long as you have the kettle diameter and height correct in section B of biabacus. Take the headspace measurement and put it in section V and you will get your current volume.

  I had my first brew session not too long ago and overall it went pretty well. I tried to be as organized as possible and wrote up a checklist to follow and tried to apply all I've read to the process. I included my BIABacus with all the information updated for my actual volumes and gravities.
  
  I brewed the NRB all amarillo APA and plugged the numbers of my gear into the BIABacus and followed the instructions as described. I came pretty close to my target GIB but fell pretty far short...

  I want to make an English Bitter. (No Short Measure in the BCS book). Put the calculations in and went to my LHBS today. For my 5.5 gallons into fermenter, it had me cut the 8 lbs. of pale malt to 6.88 lbs. The 0.5 lbs. of Crystal 120L cut to 0.43 lbs., and the Special Roast 50L cut from 0.25 lbs. to 0.21 lbs.
  
  At the LHBS today, it was a little difficult to get that exact so rounded the Maris Otter to 7 lbs. And the Crystal 120L kept at 0.5 lbs. and Special Roast at 0.25 lbs.

  I'm running excel 2007 in my computer. when I save the blank biabacus spreadsheet, it's does so perfectly. When downloading a file posted by Mad_Scientist, it saves perfectly. when I try to save any changes to the blank file I get weird messages. ie: The name cqy8 either conflicts with a valid range...

  Greg, saving the BIABacus as a 97-2003 workbook will be fine. Give that a go first. There's a possibility that, in another file, you have the cell cqy8 named? No idea. The BIABacus is actually very complicated software written into the primitive platform of a spreadsheet. If it is causing problems such as you have mentioned, the file may have been corrupted in some way. The easiest way to check against this is to download one of the main files and see if they play up in the same way.

  This is likely a simple answer, but it's not coming to me... I don't see any reason for the discrepancy.
  
  I'm brewing a German Pilsner. This time doing Santiam hops for all hops, along with same European Pilsner malt / grain (SMASH). The OG is 1.048 in both the BCS book and in the BIABacus. But the FG is 1.009 in the book vs. 1.012 expected in the BIABacus. And resulting ABV of course is different, 5.1% ABV in the book vs. 4.6% ABV in the BIABacus. This is actually fairly major.   Joshua - I had not put the yeast in yet because I'm not certain which will be in stock at LHBS. Maybe should have. Either White Labs 830 (German Lager Yeast) or WyEast 2124 (Bohemian Lager Yeast). According to MrMalty.com these are identical yeast strains. Plan to ferment at 50 deg F.

  today I did my first ever BiaB a mini stout. I screwed up the grain bill and left 9% of the grains out which probably accounts for 13 x missing points of OG
  
  What really troubled me though is I ended up with 1.8L of VIF more than my Biabacus called for. Per attached I started my mash with 11.74L (SWN). Didn't note VAW along the way but after chilling my ruler showed just under 8L and that's what ended up in fermeneter despite me configuring Biabacus to give me 6L

  Update for the record. My second BiaB of the day I reduced the SWN with some back of the envelope voodoo maths and then was sweating on the VFO target and nursing along a more vigorous boil to hit it. I ended up coming in a whisker under the VFO target (hooray).
  Then hilariously I didn't realise the tap on my new fermenter was open and lost 200ml+ of my 4L batch whilst aerating by pouring between kettle and fermenter after the chill (whoops).

  Brand new to BIAB and brewing in general. I've spent about a week on the site digesting the biabacus, reading through forum posts, watching videos and reading How to Brew. It's a lot to take in and some of it is still confusing but I'm sure a lot more will make sense (and perhaps more questions will arise) when the rubber meets the road and I run my first brew this weekend.

  Everything looks okay, but I would ditch the amber malt for the IPA (unless somebody here can vouch for it).
  
  Considering the low gravity, 7.7% would be okay for a direct substitution with crystal malt. If you want roast, I would drop it to about 5% and sub in something like Victory, Biscuit or Aromatic malt. Those are much less intense than the amber, which I think will clash with the added hoppiness (which I assume you want this to be more forward).

  First of all, thank you all for the incredible resource, your Forums have immensely helped me prepare for my brew day tomorrow!
  
  I'm planning to brew two 1 US gallon mini-BIAB brews tomorrow: a Flower Power Clone and a Kentucky Common .
  
  I've attached the two BIABacus recipes I completed for these recipes and was hoping I might get a review of them to ensure I haven't messed anything up too badly.
  
  I'll be brewing both of these in a 3 US gallon pot (separately of course hah!),...

  So my lessons learned from Brew Day:
  
  1. Use a checklist that spans the entire brew time, then you won't make the mistakes I did.
  2. Don't add hops during the mash rather than the boil, aka don't get too excited and perform steps out of sequence. See #1.
  3. Add your water mineral salts prior to the mash and boil, not after! See #2 and #1.
  4. Don't overfill your fermentor, you'll need a blow off tube then, which I have now.
  5. Make sure your fridge/incubator is set to the proper temperature, aka...
