So do I really need to constantly stir the wort until racking is complete?
From everything I have read you should be able to whirlpool and let it settle then rack.. I suppose that is when using whole hops?

Would having a false bottom help with this?

Chilling, hops and hot break

I currently use a converted keg as my boil kettle. I have a dip tube set to pull off the side. I only use pellet hops and use a paint strainer bag for them. I squeeze the heck out of it at the end. I never whirlpool and chill through a plate chiller. I want to buy this kettle http://www.ssbrewtech.c...

Thank you both for the helpful knowledge, I am understanding how this all works... I think ! :headhit:
I plan on converting a recipe I have made a few times as a 5 gal batch over to a near 10 gallon this weekend
I hope all goes well! Wish me luck!
:luck:

This is what I do. Enter 7.5 L into Section W, 'Water Added Before the Boil' and 9% in Section X, 'Adjust Auto Kettle Efficiency by'. I am assuming the 90 mins. mash and boil and the hopsock is set to 'Y'. So can you explain what this is doing exactly? I assume I add approx 2 gallons of water after...

Ok here is my completed file. 1. Original Recipe shows ABV 8.1% BIABacus shows 6.3% Why? 2. Section D: I was unsure what to input for the VAW. Where do I get this information? The AA% of the hops. I input the recipe numbers on the left, Once I I know VAW and the AA% of the hops I buy I input on righ...

pH strips - usage?

In this post http://www.biabrewer.info/viewtopic.php?f=152&t=805 PistolPatch commented on using pH test strips Specifically finding this type on Amazon "pH Duotest Analytical Indicator Paper Dispenser Roll of 5 Meters 3.5-6.8" (If anyone orders these make sure you click the Amazon banner at the top ...

Thanks to you both for the valuable information. Even though this recipe is crap, you took the time to help  I am going to read and re-read this stuff over and over till I think I understand it, and I may have some more questions. The knowledge gained with this crap recipe can only help me w...

I had my way with your file. :smoke: I'm ignoring the BU:GU we talked about earlier, but this seems to satisfy the common recipe that is bandied around. The batch size/VAW terminology does not always mean the same thing outside of this forum, so I upped that in Sec. D to 23L. Grain totals are the p...

Personally, I'd bring OG down to 1.110 and do the 90 minute boil. 85% attenuation brings it to 12%ABV that Dark Horse website lists the beer as. Ok explain this (I don't mean to be dumb about this, I just want to fully understand) How does this work - again the attenuation question... how do you de...

I took the 75% out of Section X I increased my boil time to 180, which increased my TWN to 12.54 Gallons I now have a red flag WARNING: Mash volume exceeds kettle size. I have a 15.5 gallon half barrel converted to a kettle. How do I handle this? I was looking at Section W but then was thinking if I...

Oh wow! Thanks PP! What a wealth of information! I am going to have to try this one again, this time doing it correctly!! It never occurred to me to do a longer boil like that! So I should keep my mash at 90 minutes, and increase boil to 180 correct? Rick thank you for the schooling on the hops! Is ...

You are referring to section x right? This was the first time I ever put anything in that field for efficiency. I had read another post that mentioned it and said to put the efficiency of the original recipe in that field.... Granted it was not a biab recipe. So next time I brew this I need to lower...

Did not hit target OG, why?

I attempted to make a clone of Double Crooked Tree IPA - Dark Horse Brewing Company. My target OG was 1.130. I only made it to 1.110 OG. I did a 90 minute mash and a 90 min boil. If I would have boiled it any longer I would have passed my target VIF. Can someone look at my recipe and tell me what I ...

Interesting info on the honey Majorphill :salute:. As for the honey in the BIABacus, yep, the honey goes in Section C and then gets adjusted in Section Y. In the top half of Section Y, beside 'Honey' put 95 for FGDB and 20 for MC. PP One other question for PP... How would a newbie such as myself co...
