   1. Double mashing - for a barleywine

      Hello all,
      
      Some friends and I are going to brew a barleywine this Saturday. The highest gravity I've brewed without extract in the past is 1.072 getting around 65% mash efficiency. For this barleywine I'm planning to use 11-12kg of grist. I just read about doing a double mash, so basically I'd use 6kg in the fist mash, then 6 kg in the second mash in the same liquor.       If all the grains won't fit then you are definitely asking far too much from your kettle. (Depending on BIABacus version, it will throw up several warnings in that scenario.) Start with what yur kettle will handle do an extended boil time and look at sugars to boost the OG.
      
      The only advantage of parti-gyle is that it means you won't waste any sugars but then you have to do a double brew day etc. I wouldn't consider it unless you have two sets of equipment and have a few high gravity batches...

      I've been using a modified corona mill for a few batches now and settled on the below crush:
      
      Does this look about right? I've noticed my bag is draining a bit slower than it used to, but not by much. One beer (special bitter) that I just brewed about 4 weeks ago that I've brewed a lot before (with LHBS mill) has a bit of a grainy flavor that makes me think I might be grinding a bit too fine, but I'm not positive, pretty sure it will age out and other beers I've made after...

      I've been BIAB brewing for about a year and a half and have done about 25 batches. I'm happy with the beer I'm brewing, but I've decided it may be time to tweak a few things. I am not really sure if it would be worth the trouble/expense - so I'm looking for some feedback.       I'm so glad you all talked me out of walking down that path I was headed...I've brewed a lot lately (before last week I had brewed 7 batches in 6 weeks) and have made some fantastic beers - I can't help but think I'd still be dialing things in had I bought a pump and a controller and everything. Great post natept. Thanks a heap for getting back to us.
      
      I reckon there are a few people like thughes, crusty, myself etc who have learned the hard way that simplicity is often the winner when it comes...

      I'm attempting to build a beer engine using a RV handpump (BYO has an article out there). I want mine to look more authentic so I want to get a swan neck as I would also like the option to use a sparkler tip, or take it off and dispense without. The only vendor I could find in the US that sells beer engines and parts told me that he won't sell me one for this purpose and he only sells to owners of genuine beer engines :roll: .

   5. Silver Medal Winning Special Bitter

      I got a silver medal (English Ales combined category) in the 2012 March Mashness competition with this recipe.
      I wouldn't even think of changing the grist - it has such a great malt profile. It would benefit from a bit more IBU's as well as slightly more hop flavor and aroma. Both scoresheets suggested increasing the bitterness - when I brew this next I plan to be around 30-32 IBUs with slightly more finishing hops (21g or so total in the 1 minute addition).
