      This post is a follow up to my post Here . So if you've got the book and want to use it in conjunction with the Biabacus here is a bit of info on Grahams Recipes.
      
      Batch Sizes.
      
      Graham lists the ingredients for 3 batch sizes, 19L, 23L, and 25L these are 'Volume at Flame-Out (VFO)'. The figures required for section D to scale correctly are 'Volume of Ambient Wort (VAW)'. The corrected figures are:
      
      VFO = VAW
      
      19L = 18.27
      23L = 22.11
      25L = 24.04
      
      Efficiency

      I've just made some slants to save yeast cultures on. Easier than I thought :shoot: just letting them prove for a couple of days to see if I've been sterile enough.
      The main reason for this is to save some of the liquid yeast I've got. Its £6 ish a vial and I'd like it to last more than one brew.

      I want them to be the prettiest slants!
      I used homemalted grains for making the wort, and in only 2 liters of water it turned very cloudy, with a lot of break, proteins, etc. Is not the usual cloudy wort that you get normaly with biab (i think the small volume of water is the issue, beside malt, of course). Also, the rootlets were still on the malted grains. I made a beer too with that malt, before bottling tasted good enough, i am waiting for carbing to get take a final conclusion :-)

      This is a new thread based on a topic/question raised by Quinbrew in this thread Here
      
      Case in point, I just bottled an English bitter my husband had requested I make. I did a taste-test and thought I caught a twinge of vomit in the aftertaste. As this was my third BIAB, I was very disappointed and started to review my processes in my head thinking what did I do wrong? (The previous batch smelled like vomit as well and I dumped that quickly.)

      What's the go with the strong beers this year Yeasty and trout? I actually had a bock on Xmas Eve. Not sure why they spell it with a B . I reckon an F would be far more appropriate :scratch:.

   6. Bread making including Sour Dough

      I've started making my own bread again, I used to make it occasionally in the past with varied success but this time my results are much better. Perhaps I'm more patient in my old age and I'm now more familiar working with yeast which probably helps. I've got a sour dough starter on the go which has given me one batch of sour dough bread which was great, it could do with a bit more time to mature and get more active with wild yeasty's so I'm just feeding it daily at the moment.

      No bread tonight. Making up a large batch of the Shepherd's Pie. Uses 24 oz of my Stout. Smells GREAT. Hope it tastes that good. If it's as good as I think it will be.. I'll post a recipe. Maybe even get a picture in if I can make it look good. :)

   7. New Syphon/Hop strainer

      Not wanting to drill my copper and fit a tap I have been thinking of making a Sypon/hop strainer. This is what I came up with.
      
      Here's all the parts stripped down. I soldered the bends on one end only and slightly ovaled the other end so they were a push fit when put together. The tube is 15mm and the holes (268 of them) are 3mm.
      
      This is the hopstrainer square put together. I wanted it to be free standing so I opted for a square shape.
      
      And here is the whole thing.

      LOL on the speechless bit. Seriously though, I love this and you have my brain going at a hundred miles an hour but I'm meant to be working on something else :roll:.
      
      Here's one quick, and I think probably useless thought,... if you had a wider copper tube you could sleeve over the 'exit' part of the tube, you could turn this into an auto-syphon as well. (I think :think:)

   9. Espresso Hops

      I've got a nice coffee maker in the kitchen cupboard, one of those that will do a pot of regular perculated coffee and also make an espresso, its even got a steamer for foaming up ya milk.
      
      Do you think I could use some hops and espresso them :scratch: then cool and use for hopping a beer in the keg/FV. Sounds daft but I was wondering what the high pressure hot water would extract. :think:

   10. Force carb or Prime...7.5% Belgian

       I've got a 7.5% Belgian Strong ale. (Supposed to be golden but ended up dark due to available Crystal).
       I want to get it in the keg tonight ( plus some bottles). I'm undecided on which way to go, Prime with DME or force carb ?. My thinking was to Keg and give it 15 psi for a couple of days then disconnect and leave for 4 weeks Burp and reconnect at 10ish for serving.

       When I fill a keg I put C02 on it and release the pressure two or three times to purge the oxygen. I let it set or carbonate with C02 if it's a hoppy and it has to be consumed fresh? Your beer will be great in a month or two? Don't rush it? It sounds wonderful!

   12. First no chill and well chuffed.

       Brewed today and No chilled for the first time. Apart from the saving in time I found it so much easier due to not having to be ultra careful about sanitation like you do with chilled wort. Boil end, 20 minute settle and syphoned whilst still piping hot.. :shoot:
       
       First time I'd used my syphon with hot wort and it performed perfectly. I think I might have to develope a system to start it off. Today I used a long length of tubing and some careful suction, watching for the hot wort and stopping...

       Saying that if you are happy to chill and pitch the same day I can't see any advantage. I liked it cos it removed that fumbling/hurried period of time when all you want to do is get finished (and pissed). It splits your brew day into more manageable...

   13. Just got some pellets

       Got some pellet hops today (Styrian Goldings) so I can test out how the Syphon handles these as opposed to leaf.
       
       I'm gonna pop back to the shop tomorrow ( visiting my Mams/Moms/Mums and the HBS is less than 50 yards away :P ) and get some more.
       
       They have all the basics plus Worcester Goldings listed on there web site which I find interesting. I didn't see any whilst routing through the freezer this afternoon, I'll have a good dig tomorrow.

       I love Styrian Goldings! My favorite recipe is a Styrian Golding ESB, it's very similar to Goose Island Honker's Ale (drinking a glass of it now, actually!).

       This post is aimed at UK brewers living in the Northwest. Ideally those who live along the M62 corridor and in the Manchester area, although you are welcome to meet me at the mill if you live in the opposite direction and want to take advantage of a bulk buy.        Finally I've managed to get a brew on ! I work up this morning and thought this is it you've got to do it.. So before the wife stirred and found me something else to do I got cracking.
       
       I decided to do a Blanche I was thinking about months ago, so I've dug out the calculator and knocked up a recipe which I'll post later. Just mashed in at 50c for 15Min and gotta raise it up to 68 for the remaining 75.

       During my evolution from a brewer to a thinking brewer :think: I've been giving some thought to hop additions and the scaling function of the calculator, especially late additions at flame out or 0 minutes.
       
       As I have mainly been working my way through British Ales it hasn't been often that hops have been added at 0 minutes and when they were I've just scaled according to my required volumes. Today I am brewing an APA and using hops in stock rather than buy those in the recipe.

       Leaking chillers are not fun. The O-rings tend to go quite quickly due to the heat so it's not a bad idea to keep some spares handy.
       
       I think I'm going to braze some extensions on my chillers so as the connections, if they do leak, won't drip back into the pot. When do the jobs end?

   22. Preheating your lagging..Tip ?

       Its been said that preheating your lagging helps to maintain your mash temperature for longer but I've always struggled to do this with my 2 sleeping bags and bean bag. Today however I hit on the idea of putting the sleeping bags in the tumble drier for 10 minutes. They came out perfectly preheated :thumbs:
