Well, I survived the trip to Honolulu. Whilst there I tried all three offerings from the Kona Brewery - Long Board, Hot Rock and Big Wave. I was particularly impressed by the Big Wave Golden Ale. I know that this is a stab in the dark, but does anyone have or know of a recipe for this great drop of ...

Thanks for your answers. The Kona brewery products seem to be the answer I was looking for. Lylo, I visited Honolulu in '75 but spent most of my time in the clubs in Pearl Harbour. Bob You do realise you have to take me with you, right? ---Todd A bit difficult when you are coming from the...

Craft/good beer in Honolulu

I will be in Honolulu on 1st February for a week. Can somebody point me in the direction of a Craft Beer Venue, or somewhere serving other than the usual suspects? We are in our 60's so reasonably quiet would be good. Look forward to your recommendations,

Bob

Hi Bob I am going to be brewing this recipe over Christmas and it looks like I have the same size urn you used for doing yours and I will be no chilling as well so it should be easy enough for me to try without having to convert. The only questions I have are about the hopping, I'm guessing your ho...

Hi Bob, I am thinking about doing a LCPA soon, and was wondering about how this turned out for you ? Seems very close to a recipe on Aussiehomebrew forum, but simpler ( which is good for me - a 5 BIAB newb) radroo Sorry, missed your post until now. I'm not sure where I got the recipe, probably from ...

Guys, great deal right now on a mesh laundry bag that's 36 x 24 with a drawstring $2.99 wow!! I would think that if it is like laundry bags I have seen and used then you may as well use a fish net. Laundry bags are designed to keep your gear in them, and allow plenty of water to flow through, other...

No mate, only 18 litres, but I didn't inform the wife. It just tasted so goood!

Thanks for all the feedback fellow BIABers. Much food for thought over a few beers. I measure my volumes with a steel ruler, always at the same point in my urn, so I'm confident that figures are correct. I may just wrap a towel around the beam above my urn next time and do away with the fan (unless ...

How is the climate changing from when you had 5L vs 6L evaporation? Lower humidity generally means higher evaporation. How about wind? Are you brewing outdoors in the wind? We are moving towards winter, and the humidity is definitely down, but I am looking back over about 18 months worth of figures...

Evaporation

My evaporation rate is going up. I use a Crown 40 litre concealed element urn. Whereas I used to lose around 5 litres for a 90 minute boil, now I am losing over 6 litres. I haven't changed anything, and I couldn't describe my boils as vigorous. Better than rolling but by no means vigorous. I do scra...

I didn'k know the bowl trick, sound like a good idea. When the urn was boiling last night, it was extremely hot & I assumed anything wrapped around that might melt. Any suggestions on the tried & tested stuff & where to get it? Cheers I wrap a camp mat around my urn, about 1cm thick that you put be...

This version uses New Zealand Hallertau, but I'm planning another version just using one addition of Columbus (Tomahawk) to around 25 IBU, which is easier to get hold of for US brewers of course, but I reckon it would be a great background hop.[/quote] Michael, Re your Vienna Malt Bomb using Columbu...

thanks, I'll add that to my list for cleaning this cube. I may as well do it before I use it again. How much bleach would you use? Just pour in a good quantity of undiluted bleach. Slowly turn the cube over a period of hours so that each surface gets a good soaking, then give it a hell of a good sh...

Thanks for that PP. I agree that the majority of recipes available are of no real use unless you are looking for a basic idea of something specific and are willing to experiment. I look for OG, FG, IBU and mash/boil times as a minimum, plus of course the target volume. AA % is a bonus, as are % of t...

That looks like what I usually get on the bottom of the urn above the coil. The Saison seems to have been damned from the start. Burnt gunk in the urn, wort looks like Kava, now it appears to be infected, going on the white skin on top of the brew. I'll let it ferment out, have a taste and make a de...

I used 2.4kg Pilsner, 1.2kg wheat and 0.5kg Acidulated, all Weyermann from Craftbrewer. It looks like Kava, hope it tastes a lot better! Brewed an APA today, great boil, and only the usual residue above the coil.
