      I have a chocolate stout thats been in the FV for a couple of week.
      I just tried some and it's ok but a bit too bitter. Is there anything i can add to the FV to sweeten it up and knock the edge off it before bottling?
      
      i dont really want to start a second fermentation if possible, but am willing to accept it if it happens.
      
      Also is it too late to add more chocolate as it's not overly chocolatey?

      BBh - dont think its a low gravity issue. If i remember rightly my gravities were 1068 down to 1012 (at work at the mo so am half guessing)
      
      I take it there only needs to be a tiny amount of fat to effect the whole batch?

   2. suspect stuff in the bottle?

      I bottled up some raspberry wheat beer last week.
      I've got some stuff at the top of the neck in some but not all of the bottles.
      
      I think it may be whatever was floating on top of the beer that's got siphoned into some of the later bottles.
      
      Or could it be something more suspect??

      that's what i was hoping. I wasn't at the FV end when bottling, our lass was, and so not sure what she was doing with the tube. Everything smelled ok in the FV (i used safbrew WB-06) i think.
      
      I wont be drinking it in any great quantity so........

   3. When to add the Crystal?

      I am having a brew day tomorrow. The grain bill is:
      
      Pale Malt 85%
      Torrified Wheat 10%
      Crystal Malt 5%
      
      Do i mash this lot together for the 90 mins or should i add the crystal, and indeed the wheat, later?
      And if so, why?

   4. US-05 and mashing

      I am doing an American IPA this weekend and will be using US-05 yeast for the first time.
      I have read quite a lot on the internet ( i know, i shouldn't) about this yeast achieving really quite low gravities thus resulting in an overly dry beer.
      Is there anything I can do to the mash temp to stop this happening or better still achieving an optimum window of final gravity?
      
      Is there indeed a correlation between mashing temps and FG?

      I have been thinking of doing this for a while. I was looking for something different to brew so I came up with a Imperial Honey Klosch idea. I had a 50 pound sack of grain from Cologne Germany that I bought a while back. I just doubled the grain in the regular recipe. I had 7.5 pounds of honey laying around so I dumped that in. While doing this I found a pound or two of table sugar in my kit so I threw that in too!
      
      It was a very active fermentation!! I still should get some honey...

   5. Gravity down to 1.002

      Raspberry wheat beer. 1045 to 1002
      
      Should it go that low?
      I used Safbrew WB-06 pitched at 20C
      Pitched on 30.09.12, fruit added 02.10.12 with a reading of 1006. Moved into secondary 07.10.12
      
      Tastes ok, although i dont really like raspberries or wheat beer.

   6. Batch Priming

      i used this calc
      to work out how much white sugar i would need to batch prime 10L of wheat beer to a CO2 vol of 3.3.
      
      It came up with a figure of 80g. That seems excessive to me. What do you think?

      our lass reckons i should try the steam cleaner as well. She reckons theres a wandy nozzly thing that might just get inside the neck.
      I hope so. I'll need her to show me, ooh, about 50 times i reckon ;)

      I brewed a chocolate stout yesterday using the calculator as a guide. Everything seemed to go well apart from i ended up with 17 litres of wort in the fermenter instead of the 16 litres i was expecting. My OG was also down 8 points from the target.
      
      Do you think the drop in gravity is down to topping up the kettle too much during the boil or just poor efficiency rates?
      The Actuals tab of the calc, once i had inputted my figures, gave the following efficiencies:

   8. HELP! Grain in the wort

      I have somehow managed to get some grain from the bag into the wort. Do i need to remove this before boiling?
      it's not loads, maybe a handful :dunno:

      Apologies if this has been raised before.
      
      When I try to compare a recipe using the BIAB calculator and the one on the Hopville website i get greatly differing Gravity's.
      Is this something to do with different mash efficiencies or am i comparing chalk with cheese?
      
      For example the BIAB calc says that to achieve 23L of 1058 i require 6759g of grain. If i input this to the hopville calc it says i will achieve an SG of 1068
