      Based on a thread starting here .
      Is there any interest in collaborating on cloning Wychwood Brewery's HOBGOBLIN . With the possibility of then swapping the beers amongst participants?

      Yep, another one of those millions of other documented keezer builds!
      
      I pondered over various designs, but eventually opted for the lid hinges on collar version instead of collar & lid hinges on freezer .
      Designs for these tend to fall into either sitting the collar on top of the fridge so it sits flush to edges (but can move around),
      or creating a similar collar but then fixing a larger piece of timber over it so that you create a ledge/step that fixes over the
      freezer outer edges (prevents...

      to check for leaks in the gas lines after a major set-up, charge the beer and gas lines up with gas but don't have them connected to the kegs. Leave overnight and then loosen one of the joins. There should be a good escape of gas. This checks for all leaks except leaks.
      
      Top tip that Pat, cheers.
      Checked after 48 hours and still held pressure so looks good so far.
      
      Will check the keg welds, but from memory they are fine. The first one I bought about 2 years ago and have not had any problems...

   5. Schneider Weisse yeast harvesting

      I thought I would document a recent experiment I did in case it is of any use to others.
      I visited a specialist pub recently, and bought a bottle of Schneider Weisse TAP7 Unser Original.
      It is regarded as a good quality German wheat beer, though unfortunately I have no experience of these beers so will take it as read that it is.
      I believe this brewery only uses one strain of yeast, and therefore, their bottle conditioned beers contain the same strain as for fermentation. Naturally being...

      OK, so this thread has been excised from a previous one and so may seem a little disjointed at first. However....
      
      The basic idea was that a fine crushed grain (or even pulverised/blitzed) could give you good quality wort, no compromise of quality, but in a much reduced mash time.
      I set up a side by side experiment to compare pulverised grain to shop bought pre-ground...

      Just come back from a beer extravaganza in Bremen, Germany (also known as Freimarkt).
      Did a tour of Becks brewery whilst there, and must say at source, their local lager (not exported) is the best I have tasted.
      It is called Haake Beck, and uses more hops than their standard Beck's export (all Hallertau apparently).
      
      Just some random pics of the tour, nothing exciting I'm afraid. They actually wouldn't allow pictures to be taken inside the mashing room. :angry:

      I thought I would add it to the equipment thread as well so at least people are aware of what is available.
      
      I have been thinking for a while about getting one of these for my next kettles .
      Only thing holding me back is the effort needed to fit an element. Would make a great mash tun on its own, but thats no good for us BIABers's!

      Just thought i would start a new thread for anybody wishing to impart their hop growing knowledge.
      I have a Hallertau Tradition , and Northern brewer in pots awaiting the last frost, so i can get them where they belong (in the garden).
      
      The Hallertau looks like a real slow grower, i got about 2 feet of bine growth during August last year, then had to uproot it due to some bugs taking a shine to it.
      The Northern Brewer looks like a fast one. I hadnt noticed anything until recently where it had...

       I thought I would pass on some experiences of using this yeast.
       It is only the 2nd time I have brewed with it, so I have by no means mastered it. If anybody else has had experience of it then please add to the thread.

       Hawkshead Brewery, Staveley, (lake district). It is a small brewery but with some very nice drinks. Head brewer is a Kiwi too!

       They only have to do the Captcha once when registering Jack. Of the 16 new regos in the last 16 hours or so, all seem genuine so I'll leave this system in place for a while and then rotate to something else. A confirmation email apparently fixes a lot of spammers as well so after new site structure is laid out, we might write an informative confirmation email, that tells the new member where to start as well as confirming their membership.
       
       I'll also do a major cull once the new site structure...

       Hello to all.
       
       I would buy the kettle BUFFALO 40L and I would like hear from who owns it if can be used immediately to make BIAB or requires changes
       
       I use a 40L buffalo boiler for BIAB and its great. I originally was using it just as the boiler for 3 vessel brewing, but since getting a bag I've not used my mash tun at all, BIAB is making me some great beers. After the mashing is done I tip out the grain and rinse the bag and put it back in for the boil with the hops in it.

       I have messed around with recipe a few times, and have brewed a better version (IMHO).
       The one above was very nice, don't get me wrong, but it didnt have enough of a hop punch as the original (plus it was too dark in colour) if that bothers you.
       
       My latest one has much more dry hopping, and that seems to make the difference.
       
       Sorry, I can't remember how experienced you are but if you still need to get to know your equipment, profiles, and other variables then my latest recipe...

       It is the only way we are able to do it!
       
       Copying a hop bill from a recipe, and scaling it to suit your equipment and ingredients will have consequences if they are not identical.
       This is less problematic in beers that do not rely on flavour and aroma of hops.
       
       As an example; I am planning to do Hashie's Old Speckled Hen next. The late hops in the original recipe are about half the AA% of mine, which means I need to use about half as much hop additions, but what will happen to the flavour and...

       LaserGhost, You are Correct,FWH and Post Boil Hopping do give a smooth/Softer Bittnerness and a bit more Aroma/Flavor addition, than was tought before.
       
       A 10 Minute Addition will give about a 20 minute Hard Bitterness addition, and a Soft Bitterness addition for any time after that, until the Tempeature drops below 154F.
       
       It seems Post Boil Additions have a 20-25% Bitterness utilization(a new data update).

       I did think of posting in the integrity forum, but I didn't have any questions about the recipe/integrity so thought otherwise.
       
       It's spooky that you mention the boil times, as I have always boiled for 60 mins, but since I brewed Nev's Tettnang Pilsner I have decided I prefer 90 mins, so the Tribute recipe (BIABacus) is set to 90 mins. Maybe that will make a difference as you say, who knows?

       Just thought I would ask if anybody had tried using hop aroma oils?
       Not sure whether these are just a UK thing, but if you see here , there is a choice of Cascade, Saaz, EKG, & Styrians.
       
       Note; these are used for AROMA only.
       
       Seems easier & possibly cheaper than dry hopping. I guess they are popular too, as they seem sold out!

       I have use them for years. When they first came out they were basically bittering hops. I bought them because the syringe looked cool! (Hay, I am a easy sell.) I thought it would be OK for bittering as they were a mixture of hops. They are OK if you warm the syringe first to soften the resin. Don't touch the resin to your tongue to see what it tastes like!!! Your friken tongue will go numb as if you were a detective testing a found coke stash. (don't ask how I know) you will be sorry!...

       I have a question that has been bugging me for some time now, and i wondered if anybody else has encountered something similar?
       for my last few brews i have noticed a trend when carrying out the procedure (below). Where the post boil but pre-chill gravity appears higher
       than the chilled gravity.
       
       1) After mash but pre-mashout; take a 5ml sample for the refractometer ALLOW TO COOL. Take reading.

       Just thought I would document my american pils that I did a few weeks ago.
       
       I am hoping it will turn out to be a 5% ABV very pale, quaffable spring/summer lager (UK).
       3Kg Lager malt & 2Kg rice.

       It was still grainy. Not by choice though, I boiled for about 20 minutes but then it began to expand so much that if i added more water it would have come out of the pan! I had 2Kg in a 6L pot, and it was brimming.
       In an ideal world i would have a bigger pot, or do a smaller percentage of adjunct, but as I mentioned it was a boundary pushing experiment/experience.
       
       I actually thought about pulverising the rice in a blender (whilst dry) so that you wouldn't have to boil for so long, but maybe...

       I have just bought 100g as a trial as they were 19.5% Alpha (just out of curiosity more than anything).
       I didnt want to open the bag until i was ready to run with a recipe, so if anybody has used these hops (with this much Alpha), I would be keen to hear what you did.

       Just a quick question for anyone that has an idea;
       
       Is it easy to work out when to bottle a beer so that it finishes the fermentation in the bottle without adding priming sugar?
       
       Here is an example; say i have a wort that is at 1.020, and i KNOW it will end up at around 1.010 when complete. How many volumes of C02 will that give me?
       I was just wondering if i could crash chill a fermentation at a certain gravity (to help drop yeast) then bottle it?

       I know of Brett secondary, but even that scares me, as i have heard of others having FG below 1 :argh:
       Imagine if i bottled at 1.008, and it went to 1.000 (I am thinking artillery)!
       
       I have also seen others that install a tyre (tire) valve into their cap for force carbonating, but could also be used for pressure relief i suppose.

   24. What is the extract potential of potato and rice?

       Does anybody happen to know the extract potentials of potatoes & rice?
       I have read that potato has about 1/5 carbohydrate (20%) maybe 8ppg, not sure about rice possibly similar :scratch:
       
       I have been designing a recipe in the BIABacus, but adjusting the figures to give you the correct ppg in the adjustable section (Y) is not the right way to go about it. I guess i need to know what the FGDB & MC are for these.

       I liked beachbums post, though don't think i would try that recipe.
       
       One idea i have been toying with, is to brew this with no hops. Not only would it be more like the lite styles, but i could try various hop teas to see which i like, and what suits light beers/my tastes.
       
       Todd - I have seen the instant & pregelatinised adjuncts too, but the normal rice here is much cheaper (40P/Kilo) or ($0.3/Lb). I don't really want to spend too much on this...

       A dangerous thought has occurred to me lately, and i hope there are experienced people that can tell me what is wrong!
       
       It is advised to crush grain (barley kernel) so that you do not get too much flour, but enough to allow access to the insides.
       outermost layer - 1) husk, then 2) aleurone, then the 3) inner embryo & 4) endosperm. I am guessing we want good access to 2,3&4.
       
       I understand a crush with too much flour could cause just a clogged up mess inside your bag. However; if you could...
