1. Electrim 30L MaxiBAB "Heart of Gold IPA" [Pic Heavy]

  Well I had planed to document my last brew as another member was asking about using an Eectrim Boiler for BIAB I but didn't have my camera with me. So today (well starting off last night) I brewed a single hop IPA which I am calling Heart of gold (the recipe is untested so I'll report back if its any good)
  
  I use Brewtarget software and here is the recipe
  I do an overnight mash so I started at 1am last night (or this morning if you prefer).
  Grain weighed out and ready to go

  Jeltz, I was caught in a fight er... discussion on here recently about tap water, and even using hot tap water for added assurance that it might be sterile. I was pro tap water. It's sterile in most places. Others were opposed.

  It’s interesting to hear you haven’t had problems with the few batches, and I like the way you reason things out.

  Well I'm very pleased with the brew today.
  
  The Recipe
  
  4500g Bairds Maris Otter pale malt
  150g Crystal malt
  100g Torrified Wheat
  30g Chocolate malt
  
  25g Challenger - first wort
  25g Fuggles - first wort
  25g Fuggles - last 10 minutes
  
  Yeast - Safale S-04
  
  I've been using brewtarget software as my little netbook is tricky to use spreadsheets with so I find it easier than the calculator.

  Well its nearly all gone :( I shall be brewing this again and will probably up the bittering hops a little and do some dry hopping too but still its a successful recipe. Feel free to copy :)

3. Is there a way of calculating the right strike temperature?

  I'm wondering if there is a formula for calculating the right strike temperature, to hit the desired mash temperature.
  
  Imagine the school maths question: If I have 4.8kg of grain stored @ 16C and will be mashing @ 66C with 20L of water what temperature should I heat the water to 1st..... ;)
  
  Last time I did it I went for about 72c but that gave me a mash of about 64c, ambient temperature was a little higher and there was a little less grain. Obviously if there is a way to calculate it that...

  You can cope with that by using a protective grill or something like that between the element and the bag easily.

  I know that trying to brew 100% with purified water isn't viable as there needs to be some minerals but I wondered if its the mash or the fermentation where they are needed. I have a reverse osmosis unit which produces >95% pure water and our tap water is pretty hard most of which is permanent hardness.

  I have nothing but to agree with the others .Playing with water may lead to serius screw up your brewday.Try to get a water report to have a ballpark to start with .
  There is a video here with John Plamer explaining some things and also at his web site you can find exept beneficial reading a spreadsheet to play with. .
  But first of all get a water report to take out the guesswork.

  Well I'll say at the start it was a catalogue of errors!
  
  When formulating the recipe I took Hashie's Old Speckled Hen clone as a starting point I used the percentages without thinking, which aren't quite right, and over did the crystal malt making it 18% when in fact it should have been about 10%. Looking back its so obvious that its a wrong in the recipe that I should have noticed it.
  
  Brewday was put back several times due to family stuff, so the yeast had cultured from a bottle, bottle...

  I'm not worried about what went wrong, there are so many possibilities that trying to establish what led to the odd flavour is neigh on impossible.

6. Bittering hops, how much does variety matter?

  As a total novice at AG my understanding is that the late hops i.e. those added within last 15 minutes of the boil are the ones which add aroma and flavour, while the start of boil hops give the bitterness.
  
  So how much does the variety of bittering hop affect the overall flavour of the beer? I know that different ones have different alpha acid percentages but assuming the relevant quantity is used to provide the same number of IBUs will there be a marked difference using one hop rather than...

  I have a 19L stock pot and have spotted an offer from an online supplier which I would like to take up. The offer is:-
  
  Choose up to 4kg in total combination of any of these grains:
  
  Pale Malt, Lager Malt, Amber Malt, Munich Malt, Vienna Malt, Crystal Malt, Roasted Barley, Chocolate Malt, Black Malt.
  
  Add a 100 gram pack of vacuum packed hops:
  
  Admiral, Marynka, Liberty, Fuggles, Goldings, Hallertauer Hersbrucker or Saaz.
  
  And a sachet of yeast all for £9.99

8. Picked up a cheap electric boiler

  Well I did visit the shop which thinks kits are better than AG and they did have an Electrim boiler in, which had obviously been in stock for a long time. It was £60 cheapest I have found it elsewhere was about £80 but because it had a coffee splash on the side I asked him to give me his best price, after all I was going to have to wipe it with a damp cloth!
  
  £50 brand new :thumbs:
  
  Its only a 25L boiler so I'll have to do Maxi BIAB but looking at all the options it seemed to be the best...

  The thing that made me laugh was that while he was serving me he continued to tell me how much better kits were than AG, if I had believed him then he'd have lost a sale :idiot:
  
  Just measured the capacity and I make it just under 30L to the rim, I think that I'll use my 19L stock pot to sparge and then add to the boil.
  
  On the down side Mrs J will have to knock me up a bigger bag, but that won't take her long.
