   1. 2nd biab ..volumes ...thinking out loud

      i did no 1 biab and i came out with nearly 7 gallons of wort,
      
      it was a bit hit and miss as i no chilled into a cube which held more than advertised...
      i started with 33L, and added 6 litres from flushing the bag
      
      so next brew.... im thinking of having
      
      1 cube full of water ...
      
      1 gallon to allow for the boil
      1 gallon to allow for grain absorption
      
      would this work out about right... :think:
      
      sorry about the mix of gallons and litres... :blush:

      now im itching to do another brew.... :drink:
      
      mind you its -4 outside and 5 inches of snow due tomorra ... so i think ill wait... :thumbs:

      it a severa nevada ipa clone,
      i have bought the grains and hops as a kit here in the uk. :party:
      
      would i need to adapt it for a biab brew..it will be my 1st attempt, :peace:
      
      these amounts are supposed to be for 40 pints
      
      how much water will i need to mash with, i have a 76l pot on gas,
      
      Ingredients
      
      Amount Item Type % or IBU
      5.45 kg Lager Malt or Lower Colour Maris Otter These are the grains that need mashing
      0.45 kg Light Caramel/Crystal Malt - 40L
      30.00 gm Northern Brewer (60 min)...

      this brew is done and in a keg... :thumbs:
      
      the good points
      everything went well and it tastes ok,
      it smells great ... :thumbs:
      no off flavors or infections, :party:
      
      the bad point ... :sad:
      
      i ended up with nearer 7 gallons of beer,
      so it is diluted from the original reciepe, it has a slight taste of hops and may not be very strong,
      
      ive kegged and will see how it develops,
      it tastes like a watery lager with some hop taste
      
      i will do this again...

   3. no chilling was a bit scary

      i put the brew 20+L
      in to the cube , it was very hot and the cube was a bit wobbly,
      
      did i put it in too hot, or is this normal,
      
      the cubes are food grade and quite thick
      
      heres a couple of piccys, you can see the full cube has taken on an expanded look
      
      the trub has settled nicely...

      You say that they are food-grade, but are they HDPE (high density poly ethylene)?
      
      As I understand it, HDPE is rated for hotter-than-boiling temperatures, but not all food-grade containers are made of HDPE, so that is something important to check.
      
      As to your question, I have noticed my cubes swelling a bit from the heat of hot wort, but your cubes look a little dimple-y (for lack of a better term) and look like the plastic is melting a little.
      
      I would check on their material and make sure it...

      Beer Smith is a good example of what I talked about above - two users having the same program but using it in totally different ways. You will find that some users of Beersmith treat, Batch Size as 'Volume into Fermentor' whilst others treat it as 'End of Boil Volume'. Similarly, some users treat, Brewhouse Efficiency as 'Efficiency into Kettle, or End of Boil Efficiency, whilst others treat it as, 'Efficiency into Fermentor'.
      
      Unfortunately, last time I looked, there were only two...

      ive been sitting on my hands for too long now.... :roll:
      
      i bought my 76 litre stock pot last year and have almost sorted my gas ring and supply, :party:
      
      i have a large piece of voile....an immersion chiller,
      and im off to watch/help someone do a biab next week.... :cool:
      
      now a couple of q's.... :think:
      
      do i ''need'' to fit a tap to my pot,...? or can i syphon into the fv..?
      if i do fit one how high should it be to avoid the trub,
      if yes will it need a filter on it,
      
      how much...

      ive done a few beer kits and wines,
      
      i have bought a 70+ litre s/s stockpot,and im getting a gas burner in the new year,
      
      so what would you guys suggest for a ist attempt ..... :think:
      
      i would probably do a 25 litre brew as a ist biab, maybe a lager or a stout... :thumbs:
      
      so how much grain/ hops do i need

      Stouts are great for a beginner because (as hinted above) there's plenty to hide behind if you make any mistakes :whistle:
      Also you can just wade in with some SO-4 and some basic hops and don't need to worry too much about fancy yeasts or hop varieties.
      With a stout you just need base malt, some roast barley and some tasty spec malts to give a bit of complexity .
      
      How about (for 23l brew length)
      
      4.5 kg Maris Otter
      400g Roast Barley
      300g Amber Malt
      300g Flaked Barley
      
      66 degrees 90 min...
