      Just finished the boil on my first AG and BIAB.
      
      American Pale Ale
      
      Grain
      Marris Otter 2.5kg
      Joe White Trad Ale 1kg
      Weyermann Munich 1 1kg
      Pale Wheat .3kg
      Light Crystal .2kg
      
      Expected 1.046OG
      66 Degree Mash
      
      Hops
      Chinook 20g @ 60
      Amarillo 30g @ 20
      Cascade 15g @ Flameout
      
      Hit Mash Temp!
      Got Good efficiency into the kettle 80%
      
      Eveything has gone well, I am just waiting for the trub to settle and then into the nochill cube it goes.......

      Just checking in to say that I haven't forgotten the forum and I am still representing the bag! Even though I have been working crazy hours I have been brewing like a mad man! I find brewing beer a good stress reducer (or maybe thats drinking beer!).

   2. Step Mashing

      Ok I am feeling very confident after my brew day on Saturday. I nailed my volumes and nailed my expected OG. Anyhoooo I am looking at making a kolsch and was wondering about step mashing. If some of the more experienced guys wanted to chime in and have a discussion on the pro's and cons of step mashing?

   3. Fusel Alcohol

      So I brewed my entry into the Iron Brew comp. The bill asks for some unrefined sugar to be added to the fermentables (almost 2kgs!).
      
      - Sugar toward end of boil
      - Pitched at 17 Fermented at 19
      - Raised temp by 3 degrees as fermentation slowed down
      - Roused yeast daily
      - Rested at 23 degrees for a couple of days after fermentation
      - Crash chilled at 1 deg fined and kegged.
      - Yeast was 1968
      
      I had a taste today as I was kegging it and there was a bit of fusel alcohol when the sample was around...

      It does go away with extended conditioning in a keg fridge... should be good in 4 weeks.
      
      Assuming there is some yeast left, which I'm not sure about if you used finings

   5. HERBS

      So i got bored.... and HERBS was born.
      
      Its most likely has some major issues and there wouldn't be much point to it, but I suppose it would be cool to be able to control mash temp to .5 of a degree or so.... THe heat exchanger is most likely not needed I would suppose as long as you were circulating the wort from the bottom of the pot to the top. No lifting to mashout or step mash, just set the temp mate circulate and away you go....

      I started designing a RIBS system which was like HERBS but more of a RIMS than a HERMS - had a pump but no heat exchanger as the wort would be heated on its way through by the built in electric element in the bottom of the urn. Costed it out and bought a second urn instead :lol:

      So I would like to know what the rules are at your place in regards to your beer and mates drinking it.
      
      I think its great that my friends like my beer and are starting to appreciate other types of beer. However, I think my house mates friends have started to take advantage of this. For example, helping themselves to beer when im not around (One guys had 6 pints!!). As I said im happy for people to drink my beer but I don't brew it to help other to get a buzz on before they go out as me not...

      Make them a batch? have them pay for it's ingredients?
      Great idea .. and appoint them to the bottling duty! :)
      
      I'm actually doing something similar with some friends...
      
      They want in on the brewing/beer :)
      
      So I do double batches (ie 38L in a 60L), then keg and carbonate both.
      
      I bought a counter-pressure bottle filler... now if they want to bottle they can wash the bottles, and fill the bottles off their own keg ;)

      So we all like to brew beer... Does anyone like brewing coffee? I am obsessed with coffee! Whether is be epresso, moka pot, japanese siphon, french press, or pour over filter, I cannot get enough of it.
      
      So, how do you like your coffee? What method do you use to make it? Who makes your favorite beans?
      
      I'll go first.....
      
      I love my Japanese Siphon, it gives such a clean tasting coffee that is well balanced and not bitter at all. I was recently able to get some Guatemalan Single Origin beans...

      I have to admit, I like coffee, but very very rarely.
      
      I drink it maybe when I have a training here at work and am having problems with staying awake in those stuffy meeting rooms.
      
      I drink it when we have a dinner party and then make a nice espresso with my Italian stovetop espresso pot.
      
      That's about the sum total of it, I drink possibly two pints of coffee over any given year and that is just recently, before that I might have drank two pints over ten years.
      
      I don't like the feeling it...
