      Hi,
      
      I have done two BIAB's where I created my own recipes with what I had. Both came out really great and I am very pleased!
      
      My question is the following : Can one really make a bad beer? I think I need to mention though that I adhere to the maximum percentages of grain allowed in a brew (dark malt only 10% while 100% can be pale malt etc.). The question of beer styles come into play as well!
      
      I tried using Beersmith to create recipes but, most of it is a bit confusing. I do not just chuck...

      As long as you stick to fairly core ingredients and don't go too off the planet you can't really fail. However I do know a couple of guys, including one who makes absolutely divine standard type ales who has a fascination with inventing weird stuff like Pandanus infused Geuze Saison crossover red rye concoctions that have everyone backing out of the nearest door (or diving out of nearest window) when he approaches you with his sample bottle, the one with the green fog drifting out of the top....

   2. Home Brew Shop

      In South Africa, malts, hops, yeast ... in fact everything home brew related , are sold out of home brew shops(HBS) in Johannesburg. My problem is that my LHBS is 500km from me. One can order online, but, because of the weights involved it costs A LOT of money on postage (and these LHBS owners load the postage for an extra buck). As such, this is making my hobby pretty expensive.
      
      I was thinking of starting a LHBS in my home town from home. In this way, I expand our hobby(lifestyle? :drink: )...

   3. Smoked Beer

      I have entered the following into Beersmith with ingredients I have available :
      
      (Beersmith has scaled the recipe to Mini-BIAB)
      
      1kg Pale Malt (2 Row) 33.1%
      1kg Smoked Malt 33.1%
      0.72kg Carared 24%
      0.15kg Munich I 5%
      0.14kg Chocolate Malt 4.8%
      
      Hops :
      5g Amarillo at 60min
      5g Amarillo at 20min
      5g Amarillo at 5min
      
      What do you guys think? Where can I improve/add? The reason I added Munich is because I have a little left from a previous batch I want to use before it becomes old. I have some...

      Thank you Joshua, I figured I am going to try it anyway! I am also going for a Rooibos tea beer this weekend ... I live in the country where it originates : South Africa (and not Africa as I have seen all over the internets :angry: ) so I have ample, cheap supply!

   4. Sesame Seeds

      Hi All,
      
      I made some sesame seed bars last night and I was wondering ... could this be used in beer? I think toasted sesame seeds could impart a nice flavour to a brew. Has anyone tried this? I imagine that hey can get stuck while sparging or clump a lot!

      look up peanut butter beer. i think the tricky thing is the oiliness which is similar.
      also, personally i don't think sesame seed beer would taste very good. Tahini Beer...

      My first kit beer is brewing in my cupboard but I have already decided to go All-Grain as I would like to have more control over the flavours and aroma of my beer.
      
      Before I start, I would like info on the following :
      
      I understand what CaraAmber is and was wondering if it could be substituted with amber malt or Cara 50 or Cara 20 Malt? This is for the standard All Amarillo Pale Ale on this forum. My next question is what is the difference between Cara 50 and Cara 20. Can you...
