Tried my hand at a step mash on the long weekend. 52-63-72 then ramp to 78. Hit a mighty 88% efficiency, but this is also the first time I have been able to mashout and hoist the bag via a pully system. So while I don't think the step mash helped efficiency, the ability to hit mashout temp really he...

I've refitted a couple of 5L Bitburger mini-kegs and they work pretty well. When it comes time to dispense, you can attach a keg charger to the top and add CO2 when the beer stops pouring (if you are only drinking part of the keg) or you can just open the top valve and allow air in and pour via grav...

1. Single batch (23L) 2. 50L pot on a spiral burner in the shed. 3. It is now. I bought a ladder so I can set it over top of the pot and hoist the bag via a dual pulley system and let it drain. 4. I do now. 5. I was hoisting it by hand which was frought with difficulties. It was messy and quite hot....

I'm with you on the Hands On approach. I think I am going to make my next few brews with the same weight of grain bill and see if I can a: get a handle on the heat and stir method without melting anything or overheating the grist b: see if I can stumble on a formula that works for me in my attempt a...

I would do the same but my rack is 3-4cm off the bottom, and my bag (a craftbrewer one) is tapered, so there is nowhere near the full volume of wort within the bag. This coupled with the fact that the bag is so fine means that the wort outside the bag heats up a hell of a lot faster than the wort on...

Is there a calc for doing a mashout via pulling the bag, heating the wort then dropping the bag back in and stirring to equalise the temps? I can ramp up the temp pretty quick (2 degs a minute or so), so the bag won't lose much heat hanging just above the surface. Do you reackon I could use one of t...

Think I might have to have a go. For the prize on offer in return for a measly entry fee, I think at least I stand a better chance than winning powerball :)
Will be the first comp I have entered and only my 3rd all-grain beer.
