      Hi all,
      
      I have discovered, and started to play with BeerAlchemy.
      
      It's really nice, well designed and I have learned quite a few usefull things about brewing just by putting random numbers, changing grain amounts or hop variety, adjusting IBU or ABV sliders, etc. :geek:
      
      That being said, is there any specific adjustments to make to use it with BIAB in mind and get correct numbers?
      
      One thing that bugs me is the initial water volume, as it seems to calculate backward from the pre-boil and...

      I'm beer alchemy user myself and after numerous times with separate calculations for BIAB i did som quick hacking on a utility software that reads the recipe information from BeerAlchemy and does the BIAB calculations.
      
      If anyone want to give a try please send me a PM.
      But remember this is highly experimental and I got limited spare time so you run it at your own risk.

   2. Bottles & kegs alternatives?

      Hi, here I am again, with another naive beginner question :lol:
      
      I read about the concept of real ale (basically beers kept in casks/barrels and dispensed via a manual beer engine, without CO2 adjunction? Please correct me if I am wrong)
      
      From my point of view, kegs are a big no (too pricy, too much stuff, too much tanks, tubes, etc.), but storing and filling a gazillion of bottles (did somebody say cleaning…?) doesn't fill me with pure joy either :headhit:

      I've refitted a couple of 5L Bitburger mini-kegs and they work pretty well.
      When it comes time to dispense, you can attach a keg charger to the top and add CO2 when the beer stops pouring (if you are only drinking part of the keg) or you can just open the top valve and allow air in and pour via gravity (if you plan to drink the whole thing)
      They seem to be holding up ok.

      – disclaimer: I like to read. Very much. And so every time a discover a new hobby/interest, I pick up books, and I have read my fare share of difficult/technical books –
      
      Seriously, the book is subtitled Everything You Need To Know To Brew Beer Right For The First Time , but I rather think it should be All the stuff that will ruin a beginner's enthusiasm and convince him to never ever attempt to brew :headhit:

      How to brew was one of the first books I read, I accidently stumbled across it while trying to find ways to clean and sanitise.
      The first 2 chapters of section 1 I would recommend to beginners who are doing k & k. Then things ramp up a tad.
      I think it is the sort of book that you should only take the bits out of that apply to you, trying to read it cover to cover could easily do your head in, unless you like that sort of thing ;)
      
      Personally, I really like the book and have purchased the hard...

      Hi all,
      
      I am researching for my first brew ever attempt. I don't know much about beer and brewing at all for the moment, but I noticed that the beer I drink the most are very often on the IPA side.
      
      So, what do you think about brewing an IPA for a total beginner? Doable?
      
      Can you point me on simple tested/proved recipes?

   5. Stainless steel biab-like apparatus

      I plead guilty, I like window-shopping for hobby-stuff, and being a picky/nerdy designer, I have no problem spending hours trying to find THE tool, it has to be as pleasant for the eyes as practical.
      
      So, in my quest for the true ultimate and elegant pot that will help me in my brewery journey, I stumble upon this link in another beer related forum:
      
      It's a norvegian 50L one-vessel system, with a basket in the pot, and a crank to lift it.
      Very much biab-like, a bit on the very pricey side...

      I am convinced, back to the first logical idea: a 50L pot with a tap on a gas burner with a bag…
      
      It was indeed fun looking for stuff and methods, I learned a lot, and I still haven't looked into the recipes yet :roll:

      Another round of stupid noob questions… ;)
      
      I discovered the no-chill concept, and seeing the cost in money and water of the spiral-copper-thing, I am really enthusiast. One less useless stuff :lol:
      
      I would like to keep things really simple for starters, and I wondered…
      
      1) is it possible to use the no-chill cube/jerrycan as a fermenter?
      I read you were supposed to rack the beer in a proper first fermenter, then a second. I also read that one single fermentation is ok for noobs… but is...

      Just another NOOB to BIAB. Lot's of Kits though behind me. I don't know if anyone has used these for a No-Chill Cube but they are HDPE but with a large mouth (ease of cleaning concern). I am currently awaiting a follow up email from the company to see if it can handle the temps (100C/220F) of boiling Wort being poored directly into them for overnight cooling. I would think it could handle it due to the fact HDPE is HDPE, I might add that it is thick walled also, very sturdy. It's from a company...

      First of all, I would like to thank you all and congratulate you for pushing the limits, experimenting and proving that it is possible to make great beers without tons of expensive tools.
      
      I am in a documentation process , trying to figure exactly how this new thing called brewing works, and searching for equipment, mainly a nice big pot.

      Correct Binoclard, the Hot liquor tank is known as the HLT for short apologies. In a traditional three vessel system it would be vessel #1 where the water is heated and kept for mashing in and sparging, which is the rinsing of the grains.
      Hot liquor tank--->Mash tun--->Boiler
      
      With Biab we do it all in one. So while that thing would be good for mashing I'd not necessarily use it for boiling if you want to retain the insulation.
