1. First BIAB-ish in the BK

  As I sit here typing this, enjoying a frosty cold HB (Irish Red Ale.. a little hoppier than Smithwick's, but I'd put it head to head, no pun intended) from about 6 or 7 weeks ago, my first BIAB attempt is now contently rolling in the BK.
  
  It's a porter kit from Morebeer.com (about 12 lbs of grains) and smells divine.
  
  It went into the pot at about 1.052 (corrected for temp) a touch high, but that's fine by me. In another 20 minutes I get to throw in the second round of hops then get ready to...

  ive just done my 1st biab,
  
  and i emptied the grain out of the bag and put it back in the boiler for the hops, ;)
  i did weigh it down with a dinner plate,
  i adjusted it so it stayed clear of the bottom of the boiler,
  the hops had a good swim and i could stir them too.. :party:

  I've posted this a couple other places.. apologies if you've seen it before...
  
  It was suggested this might be an acetobacter infection and after popping the airlock cap off to give it a sniff, I got a face full of vinegar-y smell... not being super happy about the prospect of losing a batch, I ran some errands, came home and sniffed it again... zero vinegar-y smell. In fact, it smells pretty darn good.

  I'd never heard of this term before so just looked it up. 'Copper finings' are the same thing as 'kettle finings' from the old days when the kettle was referred to as a copper. You learn something new every day :P.

  I've been reading through man cave thread around the brewing community forums with great interest. I'm simply amazed by the creativity of my fellow homebrewers!
  
  So in the interest of sharing ideas and information, I thought I'd share our build process... this might turn out to be a rather photo-intensive thread.. we have over 500 pictures of the build. :-)

4. Some thoughts on BIAB

  Now that I have a few BiaB's under my belt, I feel compelled to make some notes on my process (which is still evolving), and perhaps ponder aloud some of my failings and successes.
  
  Before I get started, I am not a true BiaB'er. I've taken aspects that I like from the BiaB method and have applied to to my own brewing style. I also do a few other things wrong as well, but for the most part, it works out well for me.
  
  Starting with equipment... I'm in the process of obtaining a 1/2 bbl stainless...

  So to answer the question Why am I doing this? is simple: I honestly enjoy the experimentation, the tinkering of methods and processes to create my own beer... the reason I want to create my own beer is for 1) a great deal of personal satisfaction; 2) so I know EXACTLY what I am drinking; and 3) I may decide to go pro someday.. when I'm independently wealthy, that is. :-)

  Here's some sneak peeks at what's going to (maybe) go up. Whose friggin idea was it to build a 17' trellis? Oy.
  
  I always have to post pix of my dog, Abby.
  
  First time using the camera timer! Once I got that first test post in and walked away from it, Abby went apesh*t barking at it... hilarious.
  
  And... like the idiot I am... I planned everything down to the smallest detail... but forgot I have only a 12' ladder. Ugh.

  I've got no problem bumping the IBUs. In retrospect, it does seem silly to push the OG and not push the IBUs..
