      I'm moving to a new house in a couple of weeks and I'm interested in building a SIMPLE eBIAB kettle. By simple I mean:
      
      1) No pumps
      2) No PID controller
      3) Variable (turn knob) power controller
      
      My goal is to replace the beautiful simplicity of a propane burner/kettle (without spigots)/bag with heating element/kettle (without spigots)/bag.

      I guess that the real prob with a 4500 or 5500 240V element is it gives you to much boil with out a controller. Boil overs are rough and I dont want to have to stand by pot the whole boil.

      I was gonna join some tech forum just so I could upload some dump files, but figured this was as good of a place as any. If anyone has the ability to read and interpret these, could you please give me some help.
      
      We've been watching shows/videos through Amazon's website on our PC (Win 7, 64bit). On a pretty regular basis since we've started doing this, probably once every 2-3 days, I'll get a BSOD. More frequently the whole system will freeze. Driving me bat sh*t crazy.

   3. Building a Stirplat with 110V Fan

      I have access to a 110V muffin fan and I'd like to build a stir plate with it. Has anyone done this? I can't find much on the internet regarding 110V AC fans, just DC powered fans. Anything to watch out for (ie, improper wiring that'll kill me?).

      Ca: 18,6 ppm
      Mg: 2,5 ppm
      Na: 8,9 ppm
      Cl: 10,9 ppm
      Alkalinity CaCO3: 45,6 ppm
      pH: 8,4
      
      To this I added for 27,5l of mash water:
      7,2 g CaCO3
      3,1 g CaCl 77%
      2,1 g MgSO4
      Hmmm...Any idea what the units were for Ca and Mg? Were they ppm or ppm as CaCO3?
      
      If ppm, then the Ca hardness is (18.6 ppm (mg/L) / (40 g/mol / 2)) x 50 = 46.5 ppm as CaCO3. Mg hardness is (2.5 ppm / (24.3/2)) x 50 = 10.3 ppm as CaCO3.

      I have a Janet's Brown Ale clone from BCS that has finished carbonating (OG = 1.065, FG = 1.018). The first two I've tasted have had a really nice hop flavor and aroma, nice head retention; probably the best I've brewed in these aspects. The body of this beer, though, is a little thin and lifeless, especially for a 1.018 FG. I've read that high carbonation can cause the palate to perceive a thinner bodied beer.

      Did a side-by-side between one with the pressure released a couple of days ago and one as-is. By my palate, they aren't much different. The bottle which I popped the cap to release some head pressure does have more body, the malt profile comes through a little better. However, I did a triangle test with my wife and she was able to pick the odd one out.       Over the past couple of days I've heard/read about forced wort tests twice (once while listening to a Brewing Network podcast, and today in the latest issue of BYO). I'm thinking its the brewing gods telling me I should look into it...

      Highly recommending the book, YEAST, The Practical Guide to Beer Fermentation , by Chris White (of White Labs) and Jamil Zainasheff. Page 220 starts an in-depth discussion on Forced Wort Testing. This book is amazing, but I've had to read it several times to let everything sink in... sorta. :scratch:
      But yea, I agree with you. Unless there is hundreds of thousands of dollars at stake -- skip doing this. Time would be better spent just reading this brewing masterpiece.

      I'm finishing up my last year of grad school and can't help but think about the prospect of being gainfully employed and moving into a house that is more brewing friendly than our small apartment. I manage to brew, but have been doing 2.5 gal batches mainly because we don't have any room for beer storage, having more than 2 cases of beer on hand isn't an option. Back on topic...

      I have some hops in the freezer that I want to use before buying more for another beer. I'd like to hear your suggestions on how to use them.
      
      I have quite an eclectic assortment (Hop/AA%/Weight):
      Cascade 5.9 16g
      Sterling 6.0 8g
      Fuggles 3.6 17g
      Hellertau 3.8 13g

      I'd like to keep the grain bill very simple, I was thinking about a ~1.060 IPA with 100% Maris Otter possibly buying another package of Cascade to dry hop.

       I was taking a look at this thread and it got me thinking...I have yet to get my Into Kettle Efficiency and my End of Boil Efficiency to match up. Why?
       
       In theory, these two values should always be the same since it's simply the total extract points (gravity x volume) divided by the maximum extract potential.
       
       So, G(start) x V(start) / EP = G(end) x V(end) / EP where G is gravity, V is volume and EP is max. extract potential. Doing simple algebra,
       G(start) x V(start) = G(end) x V(end)

       I had my first crack at BIAB yesterday, I did the Lady Liberty Ale from How to Brew . The brew day went really well. I was really close to hitting all my numbers and was only one point from hitting my expected OG.
