      Brewed this last week and it's tasting awesome. I just dry hopped it too
      Only change would be to use a more malt forward yeast but it's fine how it is.
      
      Hop Burst Ale (American Pale Ale)
      
      Original Gravity (OG): 1.053 (°P): 13.1
      Final Gravity (FG): 1.013 (°P): 3.3
      Alcohol (ABV): 5.21 %
      Colour (SRM): 5.2 (EBC): 10.2
      Bitterness (IBU): 32.8 (Average)
      
      (Edit: numbers are for post boil volumes)
      
      70% Pale Ale Malt
      20% Munich I
      10% Rye Malt

   3. Top cropping and when?

      Hi Gurus.
      
      I pitched some 1469 yeast yesterday at about 10am I went back to check it at about 7pm and it was ready to jump out of the fermenter and take over my shed! :argh:
      
      This is 23L in a 30L fermenter. Hopefully it doesn't blow out!

      Wondering, how long into fermentation do you wait before you top crop a yeast?
      Also, how much do you take? I have already taken about 1/3 of of the krausen to try and hold it back from world domination!

      I've top cropped a few times with great success.
      two or three days into the fermentation, when the krausen is nice and thick, i use a large spoon to take as much white foam off the top and into a sanitized jar with some boiled and cooled water in it.
      there is still plenty of yeast in the liquid part of the beer so don't worry about taking as much as the foam as you can. try not to take any brown muck.

   4. I'm aging my cube!

      Following on from my comments Here , I thought I should pull my finger out and do something about it!!
      
      The wort is from a coopers Pale Ale that I did back in January. This is the 1st cube of a double batch that I did on the day in question. The 2nd one has already been fermented and bottled. I'll be keeping a couple of bottles of this to compare it one day down the track when I ferment the 1st cube. Although, I don't know how true the comparison will be due to the aging in the bottle etc. But...

      Thanks for the pep talk :D just so you know, I hadn't lost the faith, it was more of a tongue in cheek post :P
      
      You are right, none of the posters on AHB actually did it on purpose and none of them have shown any tasting notes or side by side tastings, that have been reported.
      
      I am going to do this experiment and keep a couple of bottles from the first batch so hopefully it can be as true side by side testing as can be allowed, under the circumstances.

   5. Funky mold in my NC cube

      I opened up my little 5L NC cube today.
      When I brewed last, I thought I should put the last bit of my kettle in it for starters. Great idea, was a bit of a rushed idea though.
      Today (about 6 weeks later), I thought I'd split it up into 500mL lots for easier management and to feed into my current starter.
      
      I saw what is attached!
      It looks like mold but it didn't smell bad. When I stretched it out a bit it looked like the underneath of a field mushroom. The wort smelled really nice...

      thanks, I'll add that to my list for cleaning this cube. I may as well do it before I use it again.
      
      How much bleach would you use?
      
      Just pour in a good quantity of undiluted bleach. Slowly turn the cube over a period of hours so that each surface gets a good soaking, then give it a hell of a good shake. Pour off the bleach (I put it back into the original container for a few more uses} and then rinse until you have no more foam (yes, bleach does foam when shaken). That should kill anything,...

   6. Temp control for an urn

      I have just recently got a 10L Birko urn for doing small batches of beer.
      This is good and I gave it a run last night for a laugh and a test run of how it will go.
      
      I learnt some things:
      1: My refractometer only goes up to 18 not the 20.9 I needed it to. Looks like my hydrometer can stay out of mothballs for a bit longer!
      2: 3kg of grain in my 10L urn is too much,
      3: The element in the urn is 2400w and the boil is insane. So much so that it almost jumped out of the urn!!

      Hi all,
      
      I am wanting to embark on some small batch brewing of about 4-8 litres end product. I want to do this so I can start to whittle down my ever growing list of brews to do! :argh:
      
      My questions;
      
      Has or does anyone do this?
      What changes did you find you needed to do?
      Was it just downscale a bigger recipe?
      And with that, if you found a small batch you liked, was there any problems in up sizing it to your regular batch size?

      For my next brew, I was gonna try and do a beer in the same style as Black Sheep's Monty Python Holy Grail.
      
      Check out their website here it doesn't give too much away.
      
      I've had this beer a few times and liked it every time but once. (Uncle Dans.... need I say more?)

      With my hoppy No Chill brews I've begun doing the late additions using a french press
      
      I found I just wasn't getting enough aroma and too much bitterness.
      
      I had already tried compensating the bitterness by reducing the size of the additions
      
      My current plan is to reduce the additions by 15 minutes. I figure that everything gets an extra 15 mins at hop utilizing temperatures compared to using a chiller.
      
      Any additions which get knocked before flameout I'll steep/boil at ferment time and add...

   10. I popped my AG BIAB cherry!

       Yesterday I did my first BIAB. must say it was a good day and I learnt a few things about following instructions and my equipment too.
       
       I have already written a post on it HERE at AHB.
       
       I printed out the checklist and the calculator and used them for instruction and note taking. They really made the day a LOT simpler to work through. A big thanks to the authors of them :clap: definitely a valuable bit of kit for anyone's first few BIAB's.

       K&k, the bane of AG brewers :) When I did my first batch of AG BIAB (Schwartzbier) I still had a full keg of k&k, I ended up watering the garden with it. Compared to the AG brew, it was just crap.
