Hi dmkelgin When I started all grain I was worried about letting to much trub into the fermentor but hated wasting all that wort. I read this http://brulosophy.com/2014/06/02/the-great-trub-exbeeriment-results-are-in/ And my next batch which was the programmers elbow so I dumped everything into the ...

Hi Scott, It sure sucks dumping a batch of beer! I took one of off beers to my LHBS and luckily one of the staff is a BJCP judge. He identified phenolic off flavours and after discussing my brew day process thought that wild yeast was the most likely cause with the chill stage being when wild yeast ...

I use ball valve to transfer the wort from the kettle fermentor once cooled to pitching temp, I had pulled the ball valve apart and thoroughly cleaned it. One thought I had was to take SG reading by draining wort from the valve, could this be causing infection by the time the wort cools? I taste why...

I'm using a thermowell with a digital thermometer, I've checked this against an a standard thermometer and there is about 2 deg difference. Which one is correct I have no idea. The thermowell is handy as I have a constant temp reading, however I have to regularly agitate my mash to ensure I don't ha...

Sorry for the delayed reply, it was a busy weekend. So I went to my LHBS on Saturday and purchased some 9mm silicone hose (crikey that's $$). The silicone has some give so I can push this over the 1/2 inch fittings on my ball valve. I also checked their selection of grain bags and they only have the...

By the time the hops swell up i can't fit any more hops in so I just have a few individual hops bags. ready to go, an old grain bag would be perfect but I've only done 2 BIABs so no old bags yet. Unfortunately I don't own a sewing machine and can't hand sew if my life depended on it so I have to run...

hey Pistol In answer to your question 1. Did you see my old kettle tap set-up? See how the pick-up acts as a hoover? While you have the 90 degree thing, this still won't be acting as a hoover. (I don't think this is the most important thing though). Yep saw your pic, the vacuum bit looks great! I as...

Hi Pistol, Thanks for the detailed response. This site can soak up the hours that's for sure! Yep the main tube is my immersion heater, I place a false bottom over this to avoid melting my bag during the mash. I know what you mean about the temp probe, I have to regularly agitate the mash, my last b...

Hey Pistol, I'm racking from my kettle to fermenter via a ball valve at the base of my kettle, here is a photo of the bottom of my kettle. image.jpg I use a 1/2 inch silicon hose from the ball value to the fermenter. When racking from my primary to secondary I use an auto siphon. I'm not with my lap...

Hi guys It's been good reading! I was going to rack to a secondary so it's go know this is a good course of action. I just get sad seeing beer left behind! I like to get as much as possible from a brew day. But given I've only done 2 BIABs it may also be a case not being used to having so much trub....

I brewed this on the weekend, things went much smoother this time. The only issue I had was my evaporation rate was much less than BIABacus predicted. I think because my immersion heater doesn't boil that vigorously. Based on my evaporation rate over 30mins I calculated that I need an additional 30 ...

It was very early in Melbourne! That set up looks awesome. I've started searching for a second hand freezer today, then my home brew set up is complete. Luckily I have a keg king electric thermostat with a digital temp gauge/controller that I use to control my mash temps. I can plug a freezer into t...

No temp control for fermentation yet unfortunately. I'm in Melbourne and currently the daily temps are ok for fermenting. However I really want to control my temps so I'm keeping my eye out for a second hand fridge or freezer. Do you think one is better than the other. Plus my wife is over my fermen...

Managing the Trub

Hi Guys, I always seem to lose more wort than I'd like when transferring to my fermenter as I worry about having to much Trub in the fermenter. Is trub in the fermenter an issue or am I worrying about nothing? How do other people minimise trub loss? Whirl-pooling never works for me as I have an imme...

Thanks for the advice Scott, I'll fix the hop bill in BIABacus. Even thou I read that BCS can be a touch light on the hops it's very subjective so I think I'll leave them as is and brew per the recipe. I I'm planing on brewing this beer on Saturday so hopefully all goes well.

Cheers

First BIABacus Brew

I'm planning my second BIAB and first time using BIABacus, I going to brew the APA recipe from Brewing Classic Styles. I've uploaded this into the BIABacus, played around with the VIF to suit my kettle. I've added 3 liters before the boil as I'm being greedy and want to get the most beer out of my k...
