I'm in the process of converting my 40l urn to recirculating. Have PID and RTD probe, march pump etc. I will need a false bottom to protect bag. Do you get stuck sparges ? Do you have to stir the grain to prevent this from happening ? Do you have any fittings on the end of the return hose to help st...

Oldish post but different method. I smack a pack and when swollen up fill 3X30ml vials and stick them in the fridge. Remaining 30 ml straight into starter up to @ 1.5 L. This way get 4 goes out of 1 pack with virgin yeast each time. Easy to work out starter size from wyeast as 30 ml is the size/# of...

In FV for 11 days. Temp at start was 16C, held 2 days then up to 18-19 by end. 24 hr in fridge(still in FV)Filtered and kegged. no finings, only whirfloc @ boil. Crystal clear and bright. Not as hoppy as my extract version (probably the yeast as US05 in all extract versions.)My partner said she coul...

Just filtered and kegged the Doc Smurto GA this morning. The notto seems to have thrown a chaulky taste that I'm not to keen on. Has anyone else had this ?

It's the concealed element one ( easy to clean), no problems with a rolling boil.Had a camp mat wrapped @ it the whole time. Was @ 22 C inside. Times were: 11.50 34 L added and kettle turned on to 68 C 12.40 Added grain mash start 66. Dropped to 65 at mash out. 1.40 Mash out 2.05 78 C 2.15 Pulled ba...

"I envy you Sean, sailing and brewing, what a life." Got to finish building the bugger yet, hopefully just another year of being itchy. Long time cruisers say cruising is doing boat maintenance in exotic locations ! It's the cruising that actually got me back into brewing after @ 20 year break. Coul...

I should have built up a starter of us05, too impatient. The notto says you need 1g/L, only had one packet which is why I added the US. I've never used notto before, it's cranking at the moment at 16 C . I've gone for 6 kegs, 3 in the fridge on tap, 3 conditioning, see how that works. I normally hav...

Grain mill

Looking at getting a grain mill. Tossing up between the monster mill 2 and 3 roller 1.5 inch models. As grain crush not quite as important with BIAB ( no stuck sparges) would a 2 roller be fine or would I be better off with the 3 ?

cheers

Sean

5th brew, NEW gear

Went for a drive up to Ross' (my LHBS) on Friday and picked up one of his new BIAB bags and a crown urn (+ some kegs etc  ) Did doc smurto's GA yesterday as per recipe on AHB , ended up with 22L into fermenter @ 1.045 instead of 20 L @1.047 so pretty happy. Tipped out about 2.7 L trub and put i...

Cracked my first bottle of shwartz (PP recipe from this forum)last night after only a week in bottle, bloody good ( if I say so myself) . Problem with these mini brews is there isn't much to go around. My Nelson ale has been 1 week in fermenter ,should be able to bottle in a week. Didn't reach the s...

Bottled yesterday FG was 1.008. Bottled 11.7 L. Tasted very good. Very happy.

Brew # 2 on the boil at the moment. Ross' Nelson summer ale. House smelling good.
Tryed the rauchbier ( smokey shwartz ) at Craftbrewer a couple of days ago, another one to add to the list !

Made some more bread for lunch today with spent schwartzbeir grain, partner said I can make as much beer as I like provided I keep making bread with the spent grain. Problem is she also likes my beers. Next couple of days will have Ross' Nelson summer ale in the FV, interesting to see how that bread...

We don't go out to restaurants much any more, as I reckon most of the time I can cook better, there are some excellent ones out there though. Also with a 2 and 4 year old it's a pain in the arse going out anyway. Slight topic deviation, but last night after mashing for my schwartzbier I made some br...

Being my first BIAB I measured everything twice, so grain was spot one. I'm pretty stoked buy how it went, but the proof will come in about a months time when I get to have a taste. As we haven't got a sewing machine I haven't had a chance to get my bag made up by someone yet with the voile I got at...

MEASUREMENT Units Brew Length 9.50 lts Fermenter Trub* 0.76 lts Volume into Fermenter 10.26 lts Kettle Trub & Buffer* 1.71 lt...
