Using water from Solar system

Post #1 made 14 years ago
I have read several posts where brewers use water from a solar hot water system. I've had solar forever but I'm sure that I have read that you shouldn't use it for drinking. Please correct me if I'm wrong. because it would certainly reduce the time to heat to mash temperature.
I currently use filtered water.

If my memory serves me correctly, any hot water system that has a sacrifical anode in it is unsuitable for brewing. I don't recall why as I would have imagined any oxidised steel (rust), copper or magnesium would be small but I think we have all tasted the difference.

Most mains pressure systems, including solar, will have one of these magnesium anodes. Exceptions are all copper or all stainless steel units which are very rare here in Australia.

I have an instantaneous gas hot water system and this is perfectly fine for brewing. Very convenient actually as the hot water is already at a temperature very close to mashing.

Bob,
i don't know what kind of solar water system you are referring too, but around here everyone has solar and it's used for drinking.
here's a pic i took out of my window just now, notice the solar panels and tanks on my neighbor's building:

Yeah, right on PP, my system has the sacrificial anode. Shib, the water comes out looking milky but soon settles. I've just never been game enough to put it in a kettle and in fact we don't use tap water in the kettle, even though the local water is a good drop here. We have an under sink filtration system which gives extra good tasting water.

My system uses a 400L stainless steel tank without the anode

The water does not come out milky, but the previous electric system did

I have instantaneous gas boost on the output to
