Hello, Dave from Salt Lake City, Utah, USA. Yes, people in Utah actually do drink beer.

I stumbled upon the site when looking for methods to do BIAB. I have been brewing for ~26 years but only make a few batches a year. Given I am the only one in the house that drinks beer, a 5 gal (19 l) batch lasts a really long time. I've started making all grain (3 vessel) batches in 2.5 gal (10 l) batches and thought BIAB might make small batch brewing even easier. At this point in my brewing life, I am looking for easier, less time consuming methods to making good beer. However, IMHO automation of the brewing process would make it as about exciting as going to a store to buy the stuff.

So far it appears BIABrewer has a lot of info for BIAB, as one would expect. There does not appear to be much traffic on the system.

Like many, I started with extract brewing, then extract with a partial mash (or just favoring with barley tea), and then all grain. I still do all methods, depending on what's up.

I am an older university professor with a couple of good years left in him prior to retirement.

Hi there. I live in Northern NJ, USA. I started with extract brewing a couple months ago and have been preparing for my first BIAB brew (this coming Sunday). I've read through "How to Brew" twice and many posts on HomeBrewTalk.com. Many of those people recommended this site so here I am.

I'll let you know how it turns out. Cheers,

Dan

1. Where are you from? Oxford, England
2. How did you stumble across the site? Someone referenced it on a UK based forum I was browsing
3. What you think of it so far? I've heard a lot of good things, hoping to solve a couple of efficiency issues with my system.
4. Have you brewed at all before. If so, for how long and what method are you currently using? I've been brewing for about 4 years, I've done around 30 all grain brews and won a couple of local competitions. The Oxford scene is quite good - there are loads of clever people here and many of them also like brewing beer!!
5. Do you work? Are you retired or maybe you run a household? I work full time in marketing.

My issue is that I bought a new electric hob after the other one packed up and didn't realise my brew kettle would not be comparable with it... Yes it's induction and there isn't enough steel in my pan to make it work... I tried using a diffuser but it was hopeless. It took an hour to get it to boiling and then the boil was very weak, so I think I'm going to be left with a lot of stuff I don't want. We'll see how it turns out. But I am looking for a solution. I'm not buying a new pot I would prefer to get a new heat source. Preferably auxillary. I don't want to spend loads so buffalo are out of the running. Can I boil 24 litres on a 2kw electric hob?!! I guess that is my question!

Thanks!! Ed

Good morning,

I'm an extreme novice - strictly Mr. Beer / Northern Brewer extract kits so far, but committed to improvement. Brewing-in-a-bag seems like a good way to move in the all-grain direction, without accumulating tons and tons of gear; I tend to appreciate and believe in keeping things simple.
Going to read up and get informed - helped a friend brew a 5 gallon Sierra APA clone, definitely seems like the way to go.
Cheers!

Hi

I'm from Newport in South Wales. Started homebrewing about this time last year after a chance conversation whilst walking my dogs - back then covid rules allowed us to go out just once a day! Anyway, I got a 15L pot off ebay, ordered a load of extract and grains from the malt miller and made a citra hopped red ale ... turned out way better than I thought was achievable ... lovely. Done 10 brews since and I have the bug. Been thinking about ag for a while but can't and don't want to to go to 3 pots for all the usual reasons, cost, time, space .... I stumbled across biab whilst consuming the tons of homebrew info on the internet - same for this site, can't remember the exact reference. Anyway I now have a 40L pot, have taken the biab plunge and brewed my first - a vienna style lager from the camra book, fermenting away, close to final gravity but not there yet according to my home built from kit ispindel. So much went wrong - read the wrong figure calculating volumes so ended up boiling for ages to get the volume down - then had tons of trub in the bottom of the kettle so only ended up with 17L in the fermentor instead of 20L - ah well, it's all good fun.
Looking forward learning more as I brew more - thanks! Dave

Hello all of you !!!
Thanks to allow me to become a member of BIABrewer, info.
Regarding me, I leave in a former communistic European country and we have no tradition in homebrewing. This hobby is no popular here (yet) so even buying beer raw materials is difficult if one is not ready to spent too much money for courier fees and/or find equivalences and adapt recipe. By joining you I expect find info and suggestions allowing me to became a successful homebrewer. Being an ABSOLUTE NEWBEE CRAFTMAN, please, be gentle with me... :peace:

Welcome to the blog Jamie from Wales. Let us know if you have any questions.

There are many helpful tools on this site, in particular the BIABacus tool. It’s a free Excel file. Some of the terms will be totally new to you, so there is also a page with brewing terminology explanations that helps it all make sense. Links on the BIAB New Brewers page.

Hello everyone! I'm Tom from Sheffield; very new to brewing, only done a couple of extract kits so far, but stove-top BIAB sounds really appealing and the resources on this site have made me want to give it a try! Looking forward to getting stuck in and having access to some of the tools and calculators to make the job a bit easier :)

Cheers!

Hi all,

Awesome site. Pretty new to brewing finishing up my 3rd batch now. I originally bought a coopers craft/Mr beer 15L FV kit that does mostly 8.5L kit batches. On various googling sessions i somehow kept ending up here so signed on up.

I want to dabble in AG but without the big expenses of mash tuns and various equipment. BIAB seemed to suit what I wanted out of brewing. Originally I was thinking of small 8.5L batches and spliting yeasts to make cost effective, but after a mate tasted my first brew (Mr Beer Diablo IPA), he has jumped on board and bought 30L FV and some other bits and pieces.

So now I am thinking instead of splitting yeasts I could brew up simultaneous brews on brew day with the same yeast starter, 1 a big batch of extract and 1 a BIAB in the smaller fermenter. Then old mate and myself can split the beers down the middle. I have a temp controlled fridge and normally wrap a seedling mat around the FV for heat, so would have to have a small think about that side of things, but hoping I can make something work. I guess after some more brews and some yeast harvesting has taken place I may not need to think about it as much.

Look forward to learning all on the site.

Hi guys I've done loads of partial grain brews and made some descent beer that way but malt extract is crazy money these days and some of it questionable quality so one morning I read an article on the brew in the bag maxi method which inspired me to give all grain brewing a shot and ordered myself a 30L electric brew pot '2400W element, tap/hop filter and thermometer no false bottom or thermostat' at the same time I ordered a large nylon bag and some binder clips. I got in touch with Elitech and they recommended their STC-1000PRO temperature controller for my pot which I have on order. I'm currently looking at hot water erns for sparge water and a stainless steel wort chiller so I'm nearly there with the equipment and I'll look forward to trying my first biab brew and discussing it with you guys in due course.

Welcome to the forum @hoptician Your setup will be different than mine - smaller brew kettle and a separate sparge tank. A larger kettle would have made the extra tank unnecessary- (since using one larger tank and no separate sparge is how BIAB started). That said there are many ways to brew and I’m sure there are plenty of people doing it as you plan to.

Best of luck and let us know if you have questions. :luck:

Cheers Scott I'm just trying to keep costs down I only paid £103 for my kettle then it's a big jump in price to larger electric kettles here in the UK there also seems to be a big shortage of them at the moment too due to covid, driver shortages and brexit. I've decided on using my old brew pot to make my sparge kettle as I'll only need to heat 8 litres if I go with the biab maxi method and this will also help to keep costs down too. If I can make a 23L batch of decent beer this way then I'm one happy fella even if it takes a little more effort.
