SOLVED: "Not secure" notice - who's getting it?

Post #1 made 5 years ago
While in the process of re-arranging things here at "headquarters," one part of my main computer has decided to play up. I'm still trying to get the time and knowledge to find out which bit - hopefully not the motherboard!

So, for the last few days I've been working off my phone and ancient laptop but I am seeing this...
not secure.jpg
Q1 Is anyone else getting this?
Q2 If so for how long?
Q3 Using one browser or just a particular browser?

Main question is does anyone know how to fix it. I think it relates to some bug that has probably popped up with LetsEncrypt or certbot. I did spend days setting the whole secure site thing up but, like everything in IT, it seems like you need someone keeping an eye on every single aspect 24 hours a day!

IT Volunteers: If you have some IT skills, please request to join the group I just created called, "BDIT Specialist." I won't leave instructions on how to request to join the group as the first tier of specialists will need to be super altruistic and, a big part of that, is being willing to find answers/solutions with zero assistance.

There are hundreds of IT things that need solving on this site but I think, many hands will make light work of it.

For now, I'd like to not be seeing the picture above anywhere!

Hi Pat,
I haven't used certbot or LetsEncrypt, but you've battled through the shrubbery this far - almost there!
The certificate has to be created to include both the www and the non-www names, or you could set up a 301 redirect (in your site's .htaccess file) from the non-www to the www.
Google turned up this info page among a million others: https://www.clickssl.net/blog/do-i-need ... www-domain.

There are lots of places to tell you how to do the 301 redirect, e.g. https://portal.my-tss.com/knowledgebase ... oping.html
But probably better to change your cert to handle both www and non-www...

A quick look at certbot documentation says it supports creating a cert with multiple domains..
"-d DOMAINS Comma-separated list of domains to obtain a certificate for"

Hope this helps!
Kevin

Thanks guys :salute:

Sorry for the slow reply - my motherboard has blown and have also been doing a heap of "five minute jobs" for free (that take hours) etc, etc. (Must be a sticker on my forehead :dunno:). I must have built the computer that has just blown (probably over 5 years ago), way too well, as replacing it with something similar today costs way more than I can afford atm. I'm trying to avoid throwing 22GB DDR3 RAM and a very good processor (Intel Core i5 2400 socket 1155) in the bin.

It's great to get your answers above . All the answers are helpful. Kev's answer indicates a few of the intricacies. [EDIT: Removed long ramble :) ]

Finally my brain is not only working again, I have also had some time to actually use it :)

Just installed some server updates, one of which was Certbot. It asked me to make a choice between two things that I had no understanding of. Tossing a coin solved that problem :) . The biabrewer.info address still threw the problem up, however the "-d" trick, Kevk mentioned, fixed that :salute:.
I believe I have the certificates set to auto-renew but, if things start playing up again on 17 Oct 12:25 UTC, we'll know that's not working - lol.
Also had to get the coin out for the "mailman" update. I just received an email notification though so I'm holding on to that coin for sure!

Thanks again guys. It's very nice to be getting back on track,
Pat

P.S. Motherboard problem solved with a bit of microsurgery. Just had to use a tiny needle to straighten one of the 1,155 pins that are in the 38mm x 38mm square that houses the processor. A two hand job. One hand to hold the needle and the other to cross your fingers :P
