There are several layout and terminology changes between the two but the numbers are the same. If you want to post a file though on the forum, take a couple of minutes if necessary to copy the recipe to the latest version as there is nothing worse than having to write things like, "End of BVoil Volume - Ambient (EOBV-A), now called Volume of Ambient Wort (VAW)", etc :).

A few things have been causing trouble lately and so I have lost a lot of time in writing BIABacus help. Besides BobBrews , other things causing trouble have been lost data, major Windows 8.1 re-install (unbelievable PITA and still not complete, let alone running correctly), advanced data recovery, two Microsoft keyboards that wouldn't work with Microsoft Windows - lol (only today have got my old Logitech back and now my fingers are hitting wrong buttons) and normal work so I have been very disappointed in this last month's progress.

Now I have a keyboard that works, I'll be able to move a bit faster now. (Using this post as training to un-learn that bloody stupid MS keyboard lay-out.)

Once the help that links directly to BIABacus 1.0 has been written, I'll open the new BIABacus and recipes forum to Enthusiasts initially and then Donors. I'll ask them to re-type a few recipes into BIABacus 1.0 so as when that gets completely opened, you should have many high integrity recipes to choose from.

We might need your IT skills or advice later :peace:,

I'm ready whenever you need some IT support. Meanwhile, I think I'll take a shot at Mad Scientist's Dead Guy clone, which is at 1.3K already.

Hi Mad Scientist,

Here is my version of your Dead Guy recipe for a 5 gallon batch. I am ordering from Northern Brewer so substituted the Great Western C 15 with Briess Caramel 10L Malt:
BIABacus PR1.3K - Mad Scientist Dead Guy- shetc.xls
I was cross-checking the Dead Guy recipe against the NRB's APA recipe I did before. I noticed that the Dead Guy TWN is 8.81 gal as opposed to 8.04 gal for the APA. Is this due to the different grains?

Thanks,

Hey shetc,

When I removed all the settings in Sections X and W, the liquor to grain ration got a lot closer to each other. I then changed the OG in Section C of the NRB APA to match mine. Both files now have the same amount of start-up water.

Thanks very much, Mad Scientist! Sooner or later I'm gonna get the hang of this calculator :headhit: I'll go ahead and follow the recipe as set out in "BIABacus PR1.3K - Mad Scientist Dead Guy- shetc.xls" I attached above.

Please remember that this file has customized entries that you need to remove...

Remove everything from Sections L - Y, you can keep the 9.0%
Section E can be 1 mins for mashout
Section F becomes 1/2 whirlfloc
Section H can be 10 days at 18.4 C

Section W: Water Held Back from Mash -- Are you saying that I shouldn't do this step?
Section E: I was going to mashout for 15 mins at 170 F based on what I read in the The Commentary. So you think it is not worth it?

Thanks!

Your kettle is big enough, so yes, you can delete the 6 L I have in Section W. My mash volume would have exceeded my capacity, per Section K, so I withheld 6 L from the mash.

Oops, sorry! I re-read the commentary. You are right. It says to hold it for 10 mins. at 172F / 78C. Thanks...

Geez, I didn't even notice that -- I did 15 mins based on the Commentary. The All AMarillo APA tastes real good so I guess it didn't hurt :-)

Ugh, overheated at mash in, to 160 F. Used a storage bin as a swamp cooler to bring back down to 152 F, within 25 minutes. Blah.

shetc,

You will get it right. Your beer will be good no matter the little problems. Take your time and stay sober (look whose talking. I was bombed by 9am today) Today starts the Green Bay Packers training camp. So I am watching the reports to see who is the first Packer to get hurt and be out the rest of the season. (It's a Packer tradition). Cheers! Relax and have a home brew! (or equivalent)
tap 1 Raspberry wine
tap 2 Bourbon Barrel Porter
tap 3 Czech Pilsner
tap 4 Triple IPA 11% ABV

Pipeline: Mulled Cider 10% ABV
